Comic Book Movies 2012 and beyond

By | Feb 21, 2012 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Comic book movies are a big thing these days.  Two of the most eagerly anticipated movies of 2012 are based on Comic books.

The Avengers:  which is a compilation movie based on characters from the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man (I and II), Thor and Captain America.

Dark Knight Rises: May be one of the most eagerly anticipated comic book movies of all times.  It is the final movie in a tightly written Batman trilogy, made by one of Hollywood’s best writer/directors and starring some of the most accomplished actors. The second movie in the trilogy was so good it was nominated for multiple academy awards.  (and won two).

But these are by no means, the only comic book movies in the pipeline.  Not by a long shot.  If something works, Hollywood will beat it to death until everyone is sick of it. So here is the complete collection of all of the best comic book movies that are being rumored, produced or filmed.  Most of these films have progressed past the rumored stage and have at least had some pre-production work done on them.  Some of these are set for release in 2012.  Many of them are set for 2013-15.

Upcoming comic book movies (2012):

The Avengers:

This movie is set to be released on May 4, 2012 and should be a shoe in to rule the box office for the summer of 2012. The Avengers are a super group of heroes who are formed to combat the evil that no single superhero can handle by themselves. The Avengers are initially formed by Nick Fury, the head of an agency known as SHIELD (who has his own movie in the pipeline). The Avengers consist of Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man and Captain America. At least one villain has been identified as Loki, the nemesis of Thor.

Dark Knight Rises:

This is not only one of the most anticipated comic books films of all times, it may be one of the most eagerly anticipated FILMS of all time.  With this reboot of the classic Batman story, writer/director Christopher Nolan has created a dark and brooding hero who has reinvented the superhero genre and brought it to a new level of quality. The previous two incarnations of the Dark Knight story (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) top most peoples list of the greates comic book movies of all times and there is no reason to expect that the finale should be any dddifferent as Nolan brings his version of the tale of Batman to a close.

The Amazing Spider Man:

Spiderman and Spiderman II were very popular movies, but Spiderman 3 was an absolute critical and financial bomb. Rather than give up on the cash cow, the studio who owns the rights decided it was already time for a reboot. This is a completely new look at the web-slinger. Will it be good, or a steaming pile of crap like Spiderman 3…only time will tell.

Upcoming Comic Book movies (2013-2015)

Man of Steel:

Superman is one of the all-time favorite characters in both comic books, television and on the big screen. But the character has seen some tough times.  (most notably Superman IV, which may be one of the worst movies of all time) This comic book movie shows a lot of potential for a great reboot.  It is produced by Christopher Nolan (Dark Knight) and it is directed by Zach Snyder (300, Watchmen).  This definitely makes it the potential breakout movie of 2013.

The many Avengers movies:

Marvel studios is tying a lot of their productions around the Avengers series.  Many of the characters themselves are quite popular and do quite well at the box office. Here are some of the upcoming Marvel Avengers movies that are coming soon.

  • Iron Man 3
  • Captain America 2
  • Thor 2
  • Nick Fury Movie
  • Black Widow Movie

(the first four have filmed, or are in different stages of production, the final is barely in pre-production)

-no word yet on an Avengers Hawkeye movie. But rest assured if he is popular after the Avengers movie, it will likely happen.-

But wait…that is not all….

Avengers 2 and Avengers 2 prequel movies:

It is hard to say that there WILL be an Avengers sequel until after the Avengers movie is released.  These star studded affairs cost the studio some big bucks. They will have to make a fortune from the Avengers to give it the green light. But it is not too soon to talk about it.  You can rest assured the studio is thinking about it.

One reason you can be pretty sure it might happen is the nature of the Avengers themselves.  In the comic books, the Avengers had something of a revolving door, so each movie could deal with quite a few new members and just enough continuity to keep it interesting.

One reason it is likely that an Avengers 2 will eventually happen is due to the fact that Marvel is starting to produce some movies based on MORE characters that at one point or another were notable for being members of the Avengers.

Some of these future (possible) Avengers 2 prequels that are in the works now are:

  • Ant-Man Movie
  • Submariner movie

Upcoming DC comics movies:

Marvel comics does not have the rights to all of the popular comic book characters.  Most notably DC is the comic book house that controls superman and batman. Not wanting to be left out, there are quite a few projects in the works for DC comics.

The most notable movie is the long term plan for DC.  Those comic books have a group similar to the Avengers, called the Justice League. There is a plan to create a similar release of quality movies with an eventual tie-in Justice league movie.

So upcoming comic book movies that can be expected are

Justice League

Batman (non Nolan reboot)

Superman (perhaps man of steel will qualify for this continuum)

Wonder Woman

Aquaman

The Flash

Additionally there is another couple DC related movies in the works:

Green Lantern 2 – Honestly I don’t know WHY you would make a second part of this horrible movie.  But they are.

Bizzaro Superman- Superman's evil nemesis in movie.  Hmmmm  sounds like they might be smoking something over there.

And…more upcoming Marvel comic book movies:

The Avengers based movies is far from the only things in the works for marvel related films. Marvel has been in the movie biz for a while now, and they are starting to get to speed making movies.  The good thing is they have shown that they know a formula for making good entertaining comic book movies. Perhaps not on the quality level of the Dark Knight, but they have failed to have horrific missteps like Green Lantern.

On the way from Marvel:

The Wolverine:  Wolverine travels to japan and trains as a samurai. This storyline for wolverine was one of the most popular in the comic books and makes a great tale.  It should be far superior to the previous Wolverine tale/

X-men First Class sequel:

More of the story of the earlier tales of the XMen

X-Men (original):

A two movie arc completing the original trilogy is also in the works.

Deadpool:

One of the villains/heroes in the wolverine movie. They really did not do him justice and changed to much in the Wolverine movie.  This is talked about as a complete reboot and doing the character “right”

Iron Fist:

Martial arts and superpowered punch.  Lots of potential for a fun movie here.

Dredd:

A reboot of the futuristic tale of the judge, jury executioner of the future. Has been done previously as a bad Stallone movie.

Punisher:

Another movie that has had TWO chances to be done right, both failing.  This reboot will be number three…lets hope they get this one right.

Luke Cage:

Escaped convict (wrongly convicted) gains super strength and endurance and becomes a superhero

Daredevil reboot:

Personally one I am REALLY looking forward to. Daredevil is one of the best comic book characters, but was not given a chance with a terrible movie starring Ben Affleck.  Let’s hope this one works.

And of course there are more new comic book movies (and some reboots):

Finally there are even more in the pipeline.  Some of which could be quite good:

  • Sin City 2
  • Silver Surfer
  • Black Panther
  • Mutant Ninja Turtles (reboot)
  • Wanted 2
  • Red Sonja (reboot)
  • Lobo
  • Deathlok
  • Flash Gordon (reboot)
  • Constantine 2
  • Kick-Ass 2
  • Fantastic Four (reboot)

As you can see, the future is great for upcoming comic book movies. So enjoy them.  See you at the movies.

While you are thinking of comic book movies why not check out some Avengers toys for you loved ones or yourself, and perhaps grab some collectibles and memorabilia before all the prices get jacked up after the series of movies and popularity of the characters boost these products. You can find specific things like Captain America toys, Black Widow toys and even cool things like Avenger plush dolls.
