If you have ever suffered from acne at any point in your life, don't worry because you are not alone. An acne breakout is likely to strike at least once, and for many people they continue well into the adult years. In fact, one very common acne myth is that it is limited to teenagers, but anyone who has had a flare-up while they were an adult will know that is not true. Acne is not just a skin condition that affects teenagers with raging hormones – it is a biological process that can hit anyone at anytime. It's important to understand this because you need to know that you aren't abnormal, and you have no reason to feel embarrassed. For people with more serious cases of problem skin, it's always good to clear up the misconceptions so you can concentrate on what really matters when it comes to your complexion.

One common acne myth is that washing you face constantly will get rid of the problem. While hygiene is important, it is not the sole factor that contributes to acne. This is a problem in itself because the common misconception labels acne suffers as somehow being dirty or unclean. But no matter how much a person washes, the problem won't go away in cases of severe breakouts, and in fact it could actually get worse. The skin may be very sensitive and if you provoke it with constant washing that is too abrasive, you can damage your skin or stimulate your oil glands to produce more sebum which will further clog your pores.

If you have always believed that popping pimples is a good idea, you will want to change your mind. The habit of popping pimples may seem in line with how to get rid of acne, but in the end it only leads to bacterial infection or scarring of the skin. A person who pops their acne on a regular basis will have noticeable marks on their skin characterized by darker spots where their skin is healing from past lesions. If a pimple is deep enough then sever scarring can occur that will last many years after the condition has cleared up. In these cases, it might be necessary to get surgery to solve the appearance which can also be quite emotionally damaging. The only time popping is ok is if you are dealing with latent blackheads that are clogging a pore. In these cases where there is not flare-up it is ok to slide the blockage out, and this is actually a good way to get rid of blackheads that will relieve the pressure on your skin.

As you can see, these myths about acne actually lead people to make the situation worse on their face. Proper treatment takes patience and a bit of trial and error in finding a good topical cream that works with your skin type. You should also combine healthy living practices such as exercise and staying away from smoking. When in doubt, see you dermatologist and don't be afraid to ask for help. In time and with proper education you will be able to tell fact from fiction, and your skin will feel better in the long run.
