Comparing Skill Vs Luck When Playing Poker Games
Does a poker game
involve skill or luck? This is one thing that has been debated by many people
for a long time now. The strategies and rules of playing the poker game are
usually decided by those playing the game.
Without skills, winning the game is far beyond anyone's dream, although the group of people watching the game at a far distance may think that playing the game only requires probability and luck. They consider poker as just another gambling game or a lottery that does not require any skills for one to take part in.
Poker Involves Tournaments
However, if you go
deeper and think much harder you will realize that poker is a game involving tournaments.
Surely, other gambling activities such as blackjack have never been referred to
as blackjack tournaments. Famous poker players, who are now regarded as poker
legends, were not twice victorious in the World Series of Poker because of
luck.
if you take a look at various studies, it is evident that a poker player who has knowledge and understanding of the game performs exceptionally compared to the person without. For instance, Thomas A. James Junior, a Pennsylvania judge ruled that the Texas Holdem was a game associated with skills and such cannot be regarded as being the same as other forms of gambling. This was in a state where gambling was prohibited.
A Little Luck is involved
On the other hand, there can be a bit of luck involved when playing the game, since a lucky poker player who has the right cards can go all the way and even be victorious in the specific game. You have to somehow accept the fact that a little luck is needed everywhere. Even skilled poker tournament players will require a bit of luck to push them further towards wining the cash in a particular game. People seriously confuse poker as a form of gambling. Furthermore, it becomes difficult to categorize it as a skill or gambling when the player takes part in only one game. In such cases, it is not easy to conclude whether skill or luck contributed to the game.
Skill is Essential
The most logical thinkers will not even bother debating whether the game is based on luck or skill. They fully understand that poker players need to be conversant with the bets, strategies and rules for them to correctly utilize the best hand of 5 cards. A player who is ill-informed cannot go all the way. Luck also plays a part to ensure a player wins easily.
It is an advantage to have a favorable set of cards. Skill can be more relied upon compared to luck. It is not possible to win games consecutively just based on luck. It is possible for a player that has both good skill and good luck to win while on the other hand poker players with both bad luck and bad skill should not expect a positive outcome. In conclusion, a poker player needs the right combination of skill and luck to win.
