ComposTumbler - to buy or not to buy.

A cynic by nature, I was at first rather skeptical of the ComposTumbler but now I'm not so sure. A 100% refund guarantee is available to anyone who is not completely satisfied with the product, so it must have something going for it. And as we all know sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and make an investment.

People all over the world are now composting with Compostumblers and it seems that they are now almost a fashion statement in some countries. And they come in different sizes to tailor to your specific gardening needs too. They are not new to the market, but seem to be suddenly popular.

But can they really make compost in just 14 days? Hhmm, it does sound pretty phenomenal, but can it really be true? I mean really??

The manufacturers claim yes, and so do thousands and thousands of users. I don't own one personally, but have been seriously looking into it as I try to make my compost as quickly as possible.

Okay, so what does it take to make compost?

Organic matter, moisture, air and of course heat.

The ComposTumler just requires you to add organic matter (kitchen and garden waste) with some added liquid (moisture). The continuous movement of the tumbler itself aerates the contents whilst making a centre core in the middle where the main heat action takes place, breaking down matter and turning it into rich compost.

There are vents for air to escape and also let fresh air in with an additional drainage escape vent to let out any excess moisture. Remember you cannot make beautiful compost if your mixture is too wet!

The principle behind the speed of this gadget (well it is a gadget really isn't it) is that everything is constantly moving within the heated area, and being well aerated, speeding up decomposition and doing the job of worms. Now this I can completely relate to as I am a compost turner myself. I know most people can't be bothered, saying life is too short or there are plenty of other jobs that need to be done. But I must admit I do. During summer months I dig it over every couple of weeks and every 4-6 weeks during the winter months. I personally find that it gives me great compost much much quicker. And I don't really mind the job either - I like to see how things are coming along and get an extra bit of exercise.

So in summation, if I had the money and wasn't already in the throws and swing of things with my current composting system, I would definitely give the ComposTumbler a go, after all, they do offer a 30 day money back guarantee and organic compost in 14 days is a pretty seductive thought!

If you have a ComposTumbler then we would all love to hear how you would rate it and how well it works.
