Coney Island Aquarium In Brooklyn New York

Coney Island Aquarium

On Saturday 17, 2011 I spent the day visiting the Coney Island Aquarium in Brooklyn, New York.  My experience was all positive.  The last time I visited the aquarium was in the late 1990's.  This is my review of the Coney Island Aquarium.

I live in Long Island, New York which is about a 45 minute car drive to the aquarium with no traffic.  We pulled up to the parking lot about 11:00 am, locked up the car and headed into the aquarium.  The staff greeted us before we walked in the building with smiles and suggestions about how we should plan our day and described the different sections of the park.  We walked in, handed over our admission tickets that we purchased online to receive a 10% discount, printed the tickets out using my printer and doing this allowed us to walk right in without having to wait online to buy admission tickets.  I suggest buying your tickets the day before you go so you too can walk right in without having to wait online when you get there.  It was like having an E-Z Pass for the tolls.  A huge time saver.

The moment we walked in the building there was a huge tank filled with exotic colorful fish with colorful reefs and corals.  It was breathtaking.  We spent the first half an hour enjoying the view of the exotic huge tank.  It was awesome and entertaining.  Below are a few pictures of the fish seen in the first tank.

The video below is live footage of the first tank we viewed.  Reefs, corals and exotic fish.  Pretty cool experience and I feel children would love it.  The kids around us were so excited and having fun.

We then headed towards the area where we watched Sea Lions and Walruses swim around.  The fish-eating mammals rubbed up against the tank consistently.  Everyone got a close up of the mammals swimming around their huge tank.  Amazing to see creators like these close up.  I feel the Sea Lions and Walruses were showing off.  The video below is a short close up of one of the walruses that kept swimming around and rubbing up against the tank glass.

We then went to watch a twenty-minute live show of the sea lions.  Of course the sea lions put on a show by dancing, waving, flipping and diving into the pool aqua-pool.  The sea lions also swam up to the sets, jumped out of the water for the audience to get a real close up view of the sea lions and they were speaking too.  They made many noises and it was exciting.

Then next area we hit after we had lunch outside in the park was the shark, sting ray and sea turtle section of the park.  This section was small and short but we spent twenty-minutes enjoying the view of the sharks, sting ray and sea turtles.  The kids especially enjoyed seeing the huge sea turtles.  Below is a short video clip of one of the tanks filled with sharks, sting ray and sea turtles.  This video came out good.

There were many more spots that we visited such as the penguins that were outside in the park and the touch pool but the last area we visited had a tank with an octopus in it.  Many people gathered around this tank because seeing an octopus close up was truly amazing.  I've never seen anything like this in person, I've only seen an octopus on television.  Check out the video to see an octopus in action.  It freaked me out a little bit but worth seeing in person at least once in a life time.

There is so much to see at the Coney Island Aquarium.  I read many negative reviews about it but I am so pleased that we ignored many of those reviews.  There was a lot to do and it was an all day affair.  After we enjoyed the aquarium for about five hours we headed out to the Coney Island Boardwalk.  Beautiful view of the beach, plenty of fun food to eat and you can also order a beer while you're at it and the amusement park was jumping with families in the kiddy ride area.  Coney Island has plenty of adult rides and of course the famous Cyclone rollercoaster.
