Containing Clutter with Creative Containers
Clutter has a way of visually detracting from the beauty of a room. However, most busy people have a need to keep certain things close at hand for the sake of convenience. Fortunately, there are a number of creative containers that you can use that will contain the clutter in a visually attractive manner.
Stash Clutter in Baskets
Baskets work well for concealing clutter while still keeping necessary items close at hand. A basket on the bathroom vanity can hold a wide variety of cosmetics, lotions and creams, without making the countertop look disorganized or messy. Storing bathroom supplies in baskets instead of sitting them directly on the countertop also makes cleaning easy, since you only need to pick up the basket to clean the counter surface. Baskets also work well in the bathroom to keep towels and washcloths nearby. In the shower, rust-proof wire or plastic baskets can be hung on the wall to organize shower supplies neatly and conveniently. Baskets also work great in the kitchen, and can be used to store snack foods, silverware, napkins, or kitchen gadgets. The portability of baskets is also a great feature in the kitchen. Baskets can also be hung on the wall close to the door to hold items such as incoming or outgoing mail, car keys, the dog's leash, and other items that you commonly need to grab quickly when leaving the house.
Decorative Boxes to Conceal Clutter
Decorative boxes can be extremely useful for hiding clutter in a beautiful way. There are an almost endless variety of decorative boxes available, or you can make your own by covering a cardboard box and lid with fabric, contact paper, or other decorative materials. Boxes also work well in the bedroom to hold personal items, or in the office to keep supplies handy but organized.
Control Magazine Mess
If you enjoy reading magazines, you probably have problems keeping them neatly organized. Magazines store well in plastic holders that are specially designed to fit them. Storing them in this fashion will keep them from bending over, which often happens if you try to store them in a regular bookshelf. You can also make your own decorative magazine holders by trimming a cereal box and covering it with contact paper or fabric. If you own a lot of magazines, you can then arrange numerous magazine holders on a shelf to keep them neatly displayed and sorted.
Think Creatively When You Buy Furniture
One of the easiest ways to conveniently stash clutter is to use furniture that is specifically designed to have hidden storage areas. Good choices for this style of furniture include ottomans with tops that lift off, coffee tables that have sliding tops to cover a storage area, or a storage bench. You can also gain additional storage space by thinking creatively when buying furniture for your home. For example, always choose furniture with drawers or cabinets when possible, such as using a small writing desk in the foyer instead of a simple table. Beds with drawers underneath are another example of adding storage without taking up any additional floor space.
Just by thinking about how you can add extra storage here and there, you can make your home more attractive. Then your beautiful furnishings, from the gorgeous couch and trees wall art in the living room to the four-poster bed and vintage wall crosses in the bedroom, will have nothing to detract from their visual appeal.
