Corinne Bailey Rae (born Corinne Bailey) was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire to a Kittitian father and an English mother. She has two younger sisters. Also, she graduated from Allerton High School.

Growing Up

As a young girl, Corinne Bailey Rae studied classical violin in school. Then she started to sing at her Brethren, middle-class church that she attended. She later transferred to a Baptist church. She expanded her musical horizon when a local youth leader bought her an electric guitar. So, in her mid-teens, Corinne listened to Led Zeppelin, and formed an all-female indie group called Helen that lasted for a short time.

While attending the University of Leeds to study English Literature, Corinne Bailey Rae was working as a hat check girl at a local jazz club. She would on stage with the jazz band during down time. Now, she adds jazz and soul as the type of music she enjoys. The club was the place that she met saxophonist Jason Rae. He also worked there, too. They got married in 2001 when she was 22-years-old. That's when she added Rae to her name.

During the time of the next three years, Corinne Bailey Rae started working on solo material. She also did some collaborations that includes getting credit for the track Your Love is Mine. That song is on The New Mastersounds ' 2003 album, which was titled "Be Yourself." Another song that she assisted on was Come the Revolution which was the first single from Leeds-based band, Homecut Directive's debut album.

Progressing Forward

Corinne was signed by Global Talent Publishing, and then she made some connections to appear on stiX's debut album, "Better Luck Next Time." Together they created a song titled Young and Foolish in 2005. From that moment, She got attention from major record label executive.

Corinne Bailey Rae had her debut song, Like a Star, released before her debut album in November 2005. Her self-titled album was available for purchase in February 2006. Later in the same year, she took home the MOBO Awards Best UK Newcomer and Best UK Female.

Corinne Bailey Rae got some well-deserved recognitions at the 2007 Grammy Awards. Not only she received a nomination for Best New Artist, the song Put Your Records On received nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Corinne Bailey Rae's second album, The Sea, was released on February 2, 2010. As part of her UK tour, she will be playing the O2 Academy Leeds venue. Tickets for the October 10th event go on sale on July 16, 2010 at 9 am. Go to for more details.

Sad Note

In 2008, Corinne's husband, age 31, was found dead in a friend's apartment. The cause was an accidental overdose of alcohol and methadone.

Memorial Moments

Corinne has mentioned there's been some memorable moments in her career. First one is finding out Prince was in the audience after she came off the stage after a performance. She also immensely enjoyed playing for Nelson Mandela. She was astonished when Stevie Wonder introduced her at the Grammys knowing that was her opportunity for millions of people to hear her play. Nevertheless, the feeling she has right now is her favorite. Corinne is at the end of a six-week tour of North America to play songs from her newest album. The response she's been getting has been tremendous and more than she can ever ask for. The demographics of her audience is diverse by having people of different backgrounds of racial, social status, age groups, sexual orientation, and level of education obtained. She's playing a record, she believes, her friends since her childhood are on stage with her, and exploring North America. She is experiencing so much happiness that she didn't imagine it was possible after grieving over the loss of her husband. She has also met Bjork when the Icelandic singer threw a party with the Dirty Projectors in Williamsburg, New York. She got to perform with The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. On her tour bus, everyone danced to Erykah Badu's new album. Corinne bought a 1920s Washburn guitar from a shop in Haight-Ashbury.
