Could We Be Sitting on Atlantis?

Atlantis May Be Closer Than You Think

How can an entire continent sink into the Ocean’s depths?  Anybody that has ever harbored skepticism to the validity of the Atlantean legends has asked this question.  The answer, however, is simpler than anybody could imagine:  North America is the lost continent of Atlantis.

Of all the 5,000 accounts of Atlantis, Plato’s are the most regarded (Groves 67).  Plato told of the ancient civilization in his text, Critias.  Critias told of the knowledge of government that Atlantis possessed long before any other society on Earth, Thus enabling them, unknown to many people, to conquer the world by 9600 BC.  Plato also told of the terrain of Atlantis: its mountains were high hills covered with soil, and the plains, as they are termed by us, of Phelleus were full of rich earth, and there was abundance of wood in the mountains. Of this last the traces still remain, for although some of the mountains now only afford sustenance to bees (Keyes online).  This explanation is much like the America that the first settlers must have encountered when they came across the Midwest.

If the mighty Atlanteans had in fact conquered the world and had a system of governing the conquered, they would have invariably spread their culture.  Anybody can see that cultures across the world have many common traits.  Every civilization has followed a similar technological path.  The only reason that Europeans seemed to

accelerate is due to the development of the movable type printer, making knowledge more accessible.  Not only do civilizations learn the same, but also they have been building the same.  Pyramids, the monuments that pass the ultimate test of time, are present all around the world.  The Egyptians, Mayans, Chinese, and even the Native Americans have all built pyramids, and many of these cultures live on different “corners” of the globe.  Why would many of these people come together to build these monuments, and who taught them to build them if some didn’t even have a system of writing?  They must have built them on previous models, most likely dictated to their ancestors by the Atlanteans.

If Atlantis is right below us why haven’t we found any artifacts?  In answer to that question, take the city of Pompeii as an example.  Pompeii was once believed to be a myth due to the total lack of evidence.  In the early fifties Pompeii was excavated, from underneath tons of volcano ash, and to the surprise of excavators the scene was perfectly preserved.  Pompeii is believed to first be covered in 79AD, less than 2000 years (British School at Rome online).  If a civilization had 11600 years to disappear it most definitely could.

Many people who believe that Atlantis had in fact sunk into the ocean, they believe it lies under the Sargasso Sea.  The Sargasso Sea is unique in the fact that it almost no current, it is like a giant lake.  Portugal sailors first discovered this sea, who thought they were close to land due to the massive amounts of seaweed.  The seaweed that grows in the Sargasso Sea, Sargassum, is as unique as the sea that it grows
within, because it is free-floating kelp, not attached to the sea floor.  Humans are not the first creatures to be fooled by this illusion.  Migratory birds fly around the sea looking for land, eventually give up and move on to Brazil (Groves 67).  Some believe this as suggesting a primal memory of a resting point on their path, but the birds look for signs of land just like people do.  Some also believe that the stillness of the sea suggests that there might be earth beneath the water, interrupting the flow of the Ocean.  Surrounding currents, making the center of the area still, causes the strange current of the Sargasso Sea.  This effect can be seen in other mediums, such as hurricanes, where the eye of the storm is eerily still.  Any Oceanographer will tell you that there is no continent beneath the Sargasso Sea.

El Nino, the very utterance of the phrase conjures memories of flood, and drought respectively.  1996 was the latest severe El Nino shift, but El Nino shifts are cyclical, and happen about every one hundred years (Whitfield 92).  El Nino also affects the North Polar ice cap, causing it to float about like a loose wig (93).  This shifting of the ice cap causes “El Nino rains’ in the Sahara desert.  This process has stopped in the last ten thousand years, causing another process called desertification, the gradual changing of plains and grassland into desert.  Africa used to be lush land, green as far as the horizon, but now the land is desert.  This process also has a parallel effect, causing

Desertification across the tropic of cancer, even across the pains of America.  At one time Americas Mid West could have supported a large population, and a Nation if needed to.

What walks on four legs in the morning, then on two during noon, then on three at dusk?  This is the riddle of the Sphinx according to Greek legend.  The real riddle should be “Who built Me?”  The findings of Egyptologist West, suggest that is at least 5000 years old, to even 10,000 years old.  The erosion patterns on the sphinx are vertical, not horizontal, like the surrounding monuments (Bauval online).  This vertical erosion is patterned like rain erosion, but the sphinx lies within a desert.  The Sahara used to be a much rainier place, however, but that was over nine thousand years ago.  From this vertical erosion, placing the Sphinx’s age at about ten thousand years old.  It is more than possible that the Atlanteans oversaw the construction of the Sphinx before their demise as an everlasting reminder to their once great society.

11,000 years ago Atlantis conquered the world, 10,000 years ago El Nino stopped the shifting of the ice cap, and the Sphinx was built.  10,000 years ago the greatest natural disaster known to man occurred, the eruption of a super-volcano.  A super-volcano is just like a normal volcano, except for the fact that a minimum size is about the size of Oregon (Whitfield 65).  Geologists believe that there may be as many as three super-volcanoes on Earth, only one of which is the location known, Yellowstone National Park.  The truly frightening thing is that this volcano is getting ready to erupt again, we just don’t know

when, and neither did the Atlanteans.  The Atlanteans were believed to worship Hephaestus, the god of craft and godly fire.  Many other cultures too, worship fire gods when near a volcano.  Apparently Hephaestus couldn’t stop the unimaginable force of a super-volcano, because the molten lava would cover all of Wyoming and it’s bordering regions, ash would have easily covered and scoured the pacific coast and the rest of Middle America, and ash would have blotted the sky out on the rest of the continent (Jones online).  Fortunately, volcano ash is highly fertile so life would have gotten back to normal in a decade perhaps.  Mt. St. Helens once exploded too, also scoring the land, but even a year after it’s explosion people were allowed back on the mountain to awe at the power of Nature to rehabilitate itself.  If a Super-volcano erupted, blanketing the North American Continent, it could have easily burned the remnants of a great civilization, erasing its physical existence, but not it’s memory.  If Atlantis conquered the world, but been destroyed in the most cataclysmic way possible, it would have definitely left traces everywhere else, and it has.

Ten thousand years ago the world changed, most directly in North America.  The mighty race of Atlanteans were lost, but not forgotten.  The Atlanteans gave the rest of the world a great gift, technology and art.  Our understanding of life, the Universe, and
Everything else was stemmed from the Ancient technology passed down by our Atlantean ancestors.

Yeah, another mystery lover! Sorry, although you give great reasons to believe Atlantis could be below us, it's not. It's below Peru.

I love Atlantis, I did a whole project on it in high school. It's such an interesting story. And while I would love to imagine myself sitting on it's ruins, I've always thought it was in the Greek isles. There's one whose ring configuration matches the description of Atlantis's capital pretty well.
