Blogger is an excellent blogging platform for the new blogger who needs to get a feel for the blogging life. It can also be great for those who have a hobby blog or just want to have a place on the Internet to call their own. It can also be a good place for those who want to earn a little extra money by utilizing Adsense.
In the past year or two, Blogger has implement some great design tools that allow bloggers to create a space that is unique and that can reflect their personalities. One of the things you can now do with Blogger is putting the Categories on the top of your blog so that it is easier for readers to find the information that they are looking for.
I’ve had quite a few people ask how I have done this on my blogs so I’m going to share this with you.
You should decide on the titles of the categories that you would like to appear at the top of your blog before you start blogging. Categories are created with labels. Try to choose no more than 5-6, because once the labels that you are using get higher than this it may not display well on your blog.
Start writing blog posts (not page). As you write each post you should give your posts labels. This can help the search engines determine what your blog post is about. You can include as many labels as you like but make sure that one of the labels is the same as your categories. That way, when someone clicks on a category at the top of your page, the blog post will be displayed.
Now you need to make a Gadget that will display those specific Categories that you chose in the first step.
Go to Design and Add a Gadget. Choose the Labels Gadget. You need to make sure that the Gadget is set up right.
- Where it say show, choose “Selected Labels”; then click “edit” and click off the Labels that you have chosen to be at the top of your blog.
- Where it says “Sorting” you can chose either Alphabetically or Frequency
- Where is says “Display” you should choose List
- Do not click the button for “show number of posts per label”
Once you have saved this Gadget, move it to the space just under your blog title and above your post.
Optional – Create Sub-Headings
You can also choose to show the sub-headings of your categories in your sidebar.
Create another Gadget and Choose Labels. This time, give it a name – one of the Labels that appear at the top of the blog. Follow the steps as above but this time choose the labels that would fall under the main label. This Gadget should stay in the sidebar.
Now click “Save”.
Step 4 (optional)
If you want only a portion of the post to be seen you will need to use the “Read more...” option when you write your post. There are a few advantages to that. When readers come to your page they will not have to scroll as much to see the titles of posts. They will see the title and the first few sentences and choose which blog posts they want to read. When you are in edit mode as you write your post click on the symbol that looks like a broken page. This is where the post will end and the reader will have to click on the “read more...” link to see the rest of the post.
Watch the video to see how I have done it with one of my blogs.
