Are you a producer looking for work? Have you heard of Poptent? Well, read on as I discuss the benefits of becoming a creator with the Poptent community. Poptent is what’s considered a crowd-sourcing website. It's basically commercial contests. To break it down, companies (or brands) come to Poptent with an outline of the creative ad content they’re looking for and Poptent turns to it's creators (you) to submit their (your) concept or production and the brand then chooses their favorite(s). Now I know there are several sites similar to Poptent on the web, but I only have experience with Poptent so this article will be focusing on them.
I joined Poptent in May of 2012 and submitted my first video by the end of that month. While my spot wasn’t chosen as the official winner by the brand, (they’re smart) it did happen to grab a Top Pick Editors’ Choice Award which garnered me a nice little $500 cash reward. Pretty good I would say for my first 30 second spot1. But what I realized while creating these spots for Poptent was that every time I created something even if it didn’t win, it was still very beneficial to me. I was (and still am) actually building a portfolio/demo reel that I can use to showcase to potential clients. It's a win/win situation. Not to mention you can label yourself an award-winning producer, because after winning any one of the many awards available on Poptent, you technically are one. Poptent also has private, invite-only assignments where you get paid just for submitting, with a bigger cash prize up for grabs for the winning video. So it’s a great way to build a reel and maybe make some money in the meantime. And best of all, it’s free to sign up and anybody can join3. You can connect with other creators/producers in your area and team up, as well as network with other creatives across the globe. The staff at Poptent are really friendly, positive, and helpful too. They are extremely active in the community and are available to answer any questions you may have and help you out with any issues you may run into. It’s a beautiful thing. So what are you waiting for? See you on the next assignment.
