Creative Uses for Protein Powder
I'm a vegetarian, so I'm always looking for some ways that I can squeeze some extra protein in. Enter protein powder. It's been a staple of my diet since I discovered it around 7 years ago. Of course, I add it to smoothies whenever I make one, but I wanted to find some other ways that I can use it.
I poked my nose around online and did some experimenting and here are some of the things that you can do with protein powder:
Make a cookie. Take a scoop of the powder and stir it with a few drops of water. I mean just a few. I would kind of put it in my hand and dribble it over the powder. This will start to form a very sticky ball. You can then put the ball on a plate and throw it in the microwave for 30 seconds or so and you have a cookie.
Make protein ice cream. I haven't tried this yet, but there's apparently a new product on the market called Protein Freeze that you mix with water and freeze. It's supposed to taste just like ice cream, but have the nutritional stats of a protein powder. I can't wait to try it.
Add it to pudding. Whether you're making up a batch of pudding or just using one of the ones in the container, you can mix a half scoop of protein powder in there with it. Dessert becomes a protein-packed treat.
Use it when baking. OK, this probably doesn't work for everything, but I used one cup of protein powder as a replacement for one cup of flour in a breakfast cookie that I made. It was pretty yummy--an oatmeal cookie that was dense and high protein. Kept me full for a long time.
Cook your own protein bars. Who doesn't like those high protein bars? They can be a great way to have a meal on the go or a snack before or after you hit the gym. The costs can really add up though. There are a number of different recipes that you can use to make your own protein bars, using the protein powder as a base.
For breading. If you like fried meats (and I don't, so I've never tried this), you're supposed to be able to mix plain flavored soy protein powder with Italian herbs and use it the same way that you would use breading.
These are all the ideas that I have. Do you have any more?
