Crochet Instructions for a Chain and Single Crochet Stitch

Working a Foundation Chain

Step 1..The slip knot is always the first loop on the hook. With the short end of the yarn lying across your left hand, loop yarn into a pretzel shape. Then insert the hook over the top of the outside strand on the right and under the next strand. Pull on both tails to tighten the loop on the hook.

Make a loop

Step 2...Holding the yarn in the left hand: Using the strand coming from the ball of yarn and your right hand (still holding the slip knot on the hook), wrap the yarn completely around the little finger of your left hand, and carry it across the back of the three middle fingers. Allow the yarn to slide across the tip of the index finger as you work.

Holding yarn

Step 3... Hold the hook, with the slip knot on it in your right hand as though you were holding a piece of chalk. With the tips of thumb and middle finger of left hand, hold the knot below the slip knot.

Step 4...Making a chain: *With the hook lying across the front of the yarn strand leading to the index finger, wrap the yarn around the hook (yo) and pull the strand through the loop on the hook, 1 chain made. Repeat from the * 19 times more. When working a foundation chain the slip knot never counts as a chain stitch.

Making a Chain

Step 5...Working in the chains: Hold the strand of chains with the left hand, so the flst side of the chains face you. Three strands of yarn make up each chain. When working the first row of stitches in the length of chains, unless otherwise stated, always work under the two top stands (lps) of the chain.

Working the Chain

Single Crochet

Step 1...Chain 20: * insert insert hook from front to back under top 2 loops of the second chain. Wrap yarn over the hook; draw strand through the chain stitch only..2 strands are on the hook. Wrap yarn around the hook and draw strand through both loops on hook, 1 single crochet (sc) made.

Single Stitch

Step 2...Working in each chain across the row (do not skip any chains), repeat from * until all chains have been worked, 19 single crochets. Then chain 1 and without removing the hook from the work, turn the work from right to left to begin working the next row.

Single Crochet

Step 3...Notice the chains running across the top of each single crochet on the first row of stitches. These chains are the top 2 loops you will work under the next row. After you turned your work, these chains were not visible. However, when you insert the hook in the tiny holes that appear below the top of the stitch, you will be slipping your hook under the top 2 strands of the stitch. To begin the second row, skip the chain 1 turning stitch and work a single crochet in the first single crochet as the work now faces you. Work a single crochet in each single crochet across the row, 19 single crochet: then chain 1, turn. To make a practice swatch, continue to work a single crochet in each single crochet across the row and chain 1 at the end of each row before turning to begin a new row.

Working the Row

Tip; To keep crochet stitches even and uniform in size, crochet over the shank of the hook. You will have better control over your stitches if you keep moving the thumb and middle finger of your left hand close to the area where you are stitching. To avoid stitching to tightly, draw up the loop in the stitch you are making and allow this loop to be almost twice as large as the loop already on the hook. As a result, when you complete each stitch the work will be soft and flexible rather than stiff.
