What is Crokinole?
Crokinole is a simple board game for 2-4 players. The rules are simple enough that anyone who can sit on a chair and flick a wooden disc can play.
Crokinole is played on a round board consisting of three concentric circles split into four quadrants. Each team is given 12 wooden discs with the ultimate goal of flicking them into the center of the board.
Crokinole Board Setup
With 2 players: Each player receives 12 wooden discs. They sit on opposite sides of the board facing each other. Players will alternate turns shooting 1 disc at a time.
2 Player Turn Order: P1, P2, P1, P2
With 4 players: Each player receives 6 discs of his team's color. There are 2 teams of 2 players each. Team members sit on opposite sides of the board facing each other with the opposing team members sitting between them. Players take turns shooting 1 disc at a time moving clockwise around the table.
4 Player Turn Order: P1, P2, P3, P4, P1, P2, P3, P4
With 3 players: There are still 2 teams, but there is now one team of 2 and one team of 1. The single player receives all 12 discs of his color while the players on the team of 2 receive only 6 each of their team's color. The team of 2 should sit on opposite sides of the board facing each other while the single player can fill one of the gaps between them. The play moves in a clockwise direction as with a four player game, but the single player must take the turns of the missing teammate. The single player does not ever move from his chair, but turn order proceed as such:
3 Player Turn Order: P1, P2, P3, P2, P1, P2, P3, P2
How To Play Crokinole
Crokinole is a game that provides hours of fun for children and adults of all ages. It is extremely quick to learn and simple to play. The average round does not take more than 15 minutes to play (usually much less), so an entire game (depending on what predetermined score you play up to) will not even take an hour to play.
You can get this game set up and start playing in less than five minutes even if your fellow players have never played before. You will find that even new players have a legitimate chance of winning their first game.
Crokinole Board Maintenance
The average Crokinole board will not need too much maintenance. If you decide to splurge and get a high-end board like the one in the video above (approximately $250) you will want to take a little more care.
The important part of the board is the playing surface. It needs to be kept clean and free of debris. This will not only allow the discs to slide properly, but it will remove the need to refinish the surface. You should not need to add any wax, grease, or other lubricants to your Crokinole board.
