What is CrossFit

Crossfit is a blend of a number of different styles of training designed to create a balanced athlete with amazing GPP (General Physical Preparedness).  Crossfit combines, Gymnastics, Power Lifting and Olympic lifting in a competetive high intensity atmosphere. Small groups sometimes consisting of ten or more crossfitters often train together competing in WODS (work out of the day) to get the fastest time or most reps/rounds of a workout.

Crossfit is for you if:

  • You want to get extremely fit
  • You want to improve coordination
  • You want to improve endurance
  • You want to lose weight and improve your physique

Crossfit is not for you if:

  • You want to be a bodybuilder
  • You want sport specific training
  • You have major shoulder, back, knee or hip injuries
  • You don't want to put in major effort

CrossFit Games

More recently CrossFit has been referred to as the Sport of Fitness as there is an annual competition sponsored by Reebok called the Crossfit Games that features competitors from around the world.  To qualify for the CrossFit games, you first need to place in the local regionals, then the nationals.  If you make it through the Nationals you are entitled to compete in the Reebok Crossfit Games where you will fight against 50 other men or women for a $250,000 top prize.

Where Can I find a CrossFit Gym in Coquitlam

Currently there is only one major CrossFit gym in Coquitlam outside of garage gyms.  This gym is Rockypoint Crossfit and is located off Lougheed Highway a few minutes away from Real Canadian Superstore.  I was a member of Rocky Point CrossFit in Coquitlam from September 2010 until Ocotober 2011 and really enjoyed training at their facility.  Their Coquitlam CrossFit Box is extremely friendly and members often get together on the weekends to socialize with each other.  The coaches are all extremely friendly, and are probably the least intimidating gym figures you will ever met.  Mike, Tom, Errol and Tyler make going to the gym a very pleasant experience.  They may work you to the bone, but they do so with encouragement and proper instruction when you need help perfecting one of the movements.

How Much Will it Cost?

CrossFit prices vary from gym to gym, however the monthly fee tends to be around the $150 a month.  Before being able to jump into the daily classes, new members generally must go through basic training  to ensure they can safely perform the plethora of movements.  Contact your local gym for exact pricing.

While this seems a little pricey, consider the fact that most personal trainers generally cost at leat $50 an hour.  While training at a CrossFit gym you are essentially sharing a trainer with a handful of other members.  If you train four times per week, you are paying less than $10 per session, and you have the benfit of a qualified trainer there to ensure you are doing everything right. The trainers are also there to help you come up with a diet suitable to match your lifestyle and help you reach your goals.

Crossfit Results

Like any fitness regime, if you aren't eating properly you won't get the results you want.  A few of the members at Rocky Point Crossfit did a 30 day challenge where they followed a Paleo diet for 30 days and took before and after pictures.  You can see the results below.

I did CrossFit, at the above gym for about a year and had pretty good results. I've been battling a couple nagging injuries with my hips and shoulder, so I have been doing lower impact workouts for the last six months. Wouldn't mind getting back into it when my injuries calm down though.
