DIY Wall Decor

By Edited Sep 26, 2016 0 0

Wall decor can turn a room from being dull and boring to lively and aesthetically pleasing. Of course, you want to make it unique and have it reflect your personality. Coming up with your own designs and making your own decor is a fun and inexpensive way to style your walls.

First, envision how you want your room to look and how it will match your preferences. If you are a minimalist, you may opt to have simple designs and neutral colors, but if your tastes run more towards the fun and lively, go for bolder colors and designs that are a little funkier. Drawing a loose sketch of the area you will be working on will help you come up with different ideas to choose from.

It's easier than you would think to make your own wall sticker decals. Search the internet for pictures and shapes of different objects. You can then draw the patterns (or if you prefer, print them out and trace them) on colored paper or scrapbooking paper, cut them out, and stick them on the walls using double sided tape or contact paper. You can form flowers, trees, animals, letters and numbers, etc. – anything you want.

If you have wooden rulers that you no longer use, glue them together to form a frame. Leave as is for a rustic look, or paint it for a more contemporary design. You can then use it as a picture frame or to frame any object and hang it on your wall. You can also make picture frames out of cardboard and design them any way you want using stickers, scrapbooking materials, watercolors, and anything else you can think of.

A photo family tree makes a great wall decoration. Draw and paint a tree on a large piece of paper and attach it the wall (or use a stencil and paint it directly on the wall). Then add pictures of mom and dad, grandpa and grandma, and the rest of the family.

You can also display your accessories and jewelry on the walls by making a picture frame jewelry holder. Attach a frame to a corkboard, add push pins or old doorknobs and hang necklaces and bracelets from them. If you want to hide the cork, wrap a piece of fabric around it first (and attach with a staple gun to the back). To make an earring holder, hang a ribbon or lace horizontally across the wall and let your earrings can dangle from it.

Running out of ideas for homemade wall decor projects is close to impossible. You just need to be creative and look at everything in your home as possible craft/décor material.
