DMAE Benefits: The Feel-Good Brain Supplement

By Edited Mar 23, 2016 0 0

DMAE Benefits: What Is DMAE?

DMAE stands for dimethylaminoethanol. That long word describes an organic compound in the brain. Your noggin’ produces DMAE on its own, but you can also ingest it from fish (notably sardines, anchovies, and salmon). Strictly speaking, DMAE is a precursor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. What this means is that taking DMAE might increase your body’s ability to produce acetylcholine, conferring the benefits thereof. Some people describe DMAE as a “cerebral stimulant,” though as we’ll see, its potential benefits go well beyond the mental, from the athletic to the cosmetic.

DMAE Benefits For Your Brain

Acetycholine is an essential substance for healthy brain function, so it follows that DMAE is beneficial for certain conditions. It can help to maintain the integrity of your cell membranes. Commonly reported benefits include increased memory and concentration. It has been used to help treat behavioral problems like aggression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

DMAE Benefits For Skin

One of DMAE’s most famous benefits is its beneficial impact on your skin. It can inhibit your body’s production of arachidonic acid, which, to put it simply can help reduce the formation of new wrinkles. Many cosmetic products contain DMAE, touting it as an “anti-aging” ingredient. Some say it also helps improve your muscle tone!

DMAE Benefits For Mood

Apparently, DMAE is also good for your mood! It has been linked to elevated mood and decreased depression. One possible explanation is that DMAE might help sleep better and feel more rested after sleeping.

Partners In Crime

Your body needs more than just DMAE to produce acetylcholine, including several of the B vitamins. So you can’t just take a single supplement and expect everything to get better. Your best bet is to supplement your DMAE intake with a good multivitamin and a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables.

One of the great things about DMAE is that it is, as far as we can tell, an extremely safe substance in moderate amounts, with no known toxicity. Of course, nutritional supplements are not monitored by the FDA, so any supplement that you buy might contain contaminants or might not have as much active ingredient as it claims. This is true of DMAE supplements as well. So if you choose to supplement with DMAE, make sure to find a high-quality product from a reputable company.
