Don't Rely on Light Cigarettes to Protect You

Some people believe that filtered and "light" cigarettes are safer than the regular ones, but they could be very disappointed.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than 400,000 deaths are caused every year in the United States from illnesses caused by the use of tobacco. They also estimate that smokers die approximately 14 years earlier than nonsmokers. Most people are aware of the danger of lung cancer. Many people do not realize that tobacco is also considered a risk factor in many other types of cancer, as well as heart disease, emphysema, bronchitis and pneumonia.  Learn the fact below.

Adult smoking is down

In 1964 the Surgeon General of the United States released a report that linked smoking to cancer. When that report came out, about 42 percent of American adults were smokers. Over the decades since that time, researchers have learned that smoking is implicated in many other illnesses in addition to lung cancer. This research has been widely published. Consequently, most communities have become less friendly towards smokers. Most restaurants no longer have smoking areas. Airlines no longer have smoking sections. Many businesses and schools no longer allow employees to smoke inside. Gradually, the adult population has reduced its tobacco habit until now, when currently less than 20% of adults smoke.

Teen Tobacco Use Continues to Grow

Tobacco companies have continued to attract new smokers among the ranks of teenagers. It is estimated that about 4,000 teens in the United States try their first cigarette every day, and about 1000 become daily smokers.

Many people believe that Light or Low tar Cigarettes are Safer

For years, the tobacco companies have fought the decline in tobacco sales by telling consumers that they could buy filtered, light or low-tar cigarettes. They implied that these could be safer. However, research has shown that these so-called lighter tobacco products are just as dangerous as plain cigarettes. In fact, consumers can actually get as much nicotine and tar from these cigarettes as regular ones, and sometimes people will consume more because they believe they are smoking safer cigarettes. Don't be fooled!

Tobacco Companies Can No Longer Use this False Advertising

In 2009, Congress passed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which prohibits tobacco companies from using the words "light," "low," and "mild" on cigarette packaging. The purpose of this is to discourage people from getting the impression that these cigarettes are safer.

It is Possible to Quit

Although it isn't easy, it is possible to quit smoking. It often takes people several tries before they are successful, so don't be surprised if this is true for you. There are many programs to help. Sometimes employers or insurance companies will pay for smoking cessation programs. You can also get information on quitting from or by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669; TTY 1-800-332-8615.)
