Is The Daniel Fast The Answer To An Effective Weight Loss Program?
Daniel's Diet or The Daniel Fast has fast become a weight loss program of choice especially for those who seek both weight loss and spiritual advancement through fasting. The book and the diet itself is based on what Daniel does in chapter 10 of the Book of Daniel, when he refused the king's meats and wines for a period. However, that is in chapter 10. Chapter one tells a clearer story of what Daniel's daily diet consist of on a regular basis. The modern day 21 day diet program is plant-based and allows you to drink nothing but water during your weight loss and spiritual development program. For men and women of the world who want to get that magazine like figure, this could possibly be a solution for you.
Can This Diet Plan Really Be Considered A Fast?
In short, I guess it depends on who you speak to. The word "fast" used to describe this 21 day plan is misleading in my opinion because you can have food. Traditionally, this is really a fast as the word is understood by the majority. If I regularly eat meat, and white bread, cookies, cake and soda and then decided to take the cookies, cake and soda out of my diet for a week, I can't really call that fasting. However, the author of the book and originator of the name of this diet plan has another understanding.
So What About Daniel, How Did He Eat?
While there are great points to the books, understand, that this wasn't a "fast" to Daniel. It was his way of life, it was how he lived and what he ate every day. In Chapter one of Daniel (King James Bible), we see that Daniel refused the king's meats and challenged the king's way of eating against his own to see which one would produce a healthier countenance.
According to KingJamesBibleOnline.org (Chapter 1:7-16) the interaction went as such:
Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel [the name] of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which [are] of your sort? then shall ye make [me] endanger my head to the king.
11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.
16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
So as you can see, Daniel's way of eating was a lifestyle that he lived everyday that promoted better health-it wasn't just a temporary fast. The word "pulse" has been said to mean "bean" but it has also been said to vegetables in general depending on what version of the Bible you read and who you talk to. In either case, let's take it to mean plant based food.
Should I Do The "Daniel" 21-Day Diet- Is It Right For Me?
Quite frankly, only you can answer that. Only you know your current physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual condition. I do believe it is something to consider especially since it not only focuses on the physical, but also on the spiritual. Many people have weight problems that do not go away because it is not only a physical problem, it is something that is tied to their emotional and psychological well-being. Since the human being is both physical and spiritual, it makes sense to cure any ills that affect you on a physical level, also on a spiritual level. This program although similar to Bob Harper's Diet and Weight Loss Program, in respect to dealing with nonphysical impediments to weight loss, differs in so far as this plan focuses more on a spiritual aspect rather than just a psychological aspect. According to reviews on her book, she gives you devotional selections for every day of the 21 day fast and she does dive you clear instructions on how to complete the program. Recipes are also included.
The only things that is of some concern is that soy in the form of tofu is suggested on some of the menus. Many nutritional and health experts have come out against the use of soy and soy products. However, I'm sure there are options for those who do not eat soy or soy products.
