Floral bed linens don't have to be juvenile or too feminine. They can add a lot of subtle texture and design to the space. Flowers are a way to bring the outdoors in but that doesn't mean that they have to be oppressive or too girly. Here are a few tips for decorating with floral bed linens while still using restraint.

Vintage Floral Bedding

This is a must for the shabby chic design style. Mix and match for a country look. This will help tone down your floral prints, but it will also add a little character to your bedding set. This is an opportunity to bring in more masculine stripes and plaids just as long as they are in the same color palette as the floral print.

Try to make florals sophisticated. You could make traditional flowers a little more elegant by going with a floral print with a tone on tone texture so that it's very subtle. This will enable you to have a more sophisticated space while still getting that garden feel that you really love. Another option for this kind of design style is to go with a lace overlay. Just make sure that you can clean it. Lace can have a vintage touch or feminine feeling and it's more of a subtle way to bring in a floral print.

Floral bed linens don't have to remind you of a hotel or your grandmother's guest room. Instead, make a very modern and contemporary feeling. An easy way to do this is by going with more of a pop art feeling. You can do this by bringing in a white duvet cover that just has a huge flower painted on it. This might bring in a lot of daring colors like hot pinks and oranges. This will work for a master bedroom or even a teen's bedroom. Plus it's a less feminine take on flowers so you can even use it in a guestroom.

Change up the color of the flowers. Floral prints come in a variety of colors so you don't have to have the sweet nursery look even if you are 40. In fact when you play around with color it ensures that you will have something unique about a traditional print. You could mix and match turquoise or grays so really get a unique contemporary look that still has that very antique or vintage flair to it.

Use restraint. This is very important in decorating with an item that is not gender neutral. You can alleviate this problem just by going with more of a subtle look. The main part of your bedding such as the comforter and sheets could be solid color. This will give you a lot more design versatility and will make sure that you don't go over the top with your theme. Then you could just bring in a throw pillow that looks like it's made out of roses. This is just a more sophisticated look, but it's also a floral idea that many people haven't seen before. Another option would be to make a floral throw or quilt and place it on the end of your bed to bring in your favorite pattern that won't dominate the entire room.
