Degrees that Make Great Careers

By | Jun 23, 2011 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”  This is one of the questions of every childhood you have to face it. Parents, school teachers, kindergarten teachers, neighbors and friends, everybody wanted to know what would become of you once you turned into a young adult and met with life as we know it.

Rare are the cases when a young child can actually predict his entire future based on such a silly question, but there are ways of partially deciding on the type of the career a child might possess a lot of interest. Children who love to play doctor (and needles never scare them) have the tendency of becoming doctors, while kids who are small geniuses in math or physics almost always pick a career in engineering or another exact science.

Of course, choosing the best high school and then the right university or college are difficult tasks for the under-instructed students that have only recently started to figure their lives out. But these are decisions that need to be made no matter what, and getting things right in the first place means boosting your chances of landing the perfect job that can provide you with all the stuff you need or want for the rest of your life, retirement included.

A bachelor or a master degree in undergrad engineering seems to be a wise choice when it comes to laying all the cards on the table. Such a degree means having to take some really tough courses, so you need to decide if becoming a computer science engineer or a chemical engineer is something that might interest you for the rest of your life. Moreover, a lot of studies have shown the fact that a great variety of engineering majors are the top leaders of the top ten salary spots. You could be earning as much as $65,000 per year for starters, which greatly increases the chances of boosting your income for the years to come.

You could also focus your full attention on getting a nursing, medical technician, pharmacy or physical therapy degree and become part of those people who have no problems having to deal with the recession. As a registered nurse, you can end up earning as much as $52k per year, and this is only the average starting salary. Other health and related sciences paychecks might rise up to $35,000 per year or more, for starters.

A degree in marketing might also do the trick for you should you be willing to spend 8 or more hours a day coming up with new advertising campaigns or top-notch selling strategies that actually bring money the company a few bucks. While we are at it, you could be looking at some nice average starting pays of up to $41,000 a year.

All in all, there is nothing a great and well-thought out degree in the right field along with a great mind cannot bring you, especially in some major economical downturns. The trick is to choose a career with both great need and high paying entry level jobs. With those two bases taken care of,  your degree should take you far and your career outlook will be rosy.
