RPGs and Shooter games are usually cousins on two separate sides of a country. They're usually in the same family (video games), but they don't often meet. Usually they're just not really together. It does happen sometimes. Deus Ex or Bioshock come to mind, but never too often can you just recall one off the top of your head, at least not the casual fan.
Destiny is one of those games, willing to break the separate cousin mold. Destiny is an upcoming game, fitting in the interesting niche, the RPG/Shooter hybrid genre. Specifically speaking of the action role-playing first-person shooter, which takes place in a “mythic science fiction” open world setting.
Not only is the game significant in its genre, but also in its development/publishing as well. After its break from Microsoft, and a ten-year publishing deal with Activision, Destiny will be the first game developed by Bungie since Halo Reach. Since the release of Oni, it will be released on a PlayStation console: Playstation 3 and 4 as well as the Xbox 360 and One. Bungie is clearly showing favoritism to the PlayStation side however, with beta versions of the game being released first in the summer of 2014.
Destiny will take some time to be released with an expected date of September 2014. However beta versions can be pre-ordered now from Amazon.com. You will be able to rush through the open-world with the beta release sometime in the Summer. For those who have never pre-ordered on Amazon, it will work like this, Amazon will email you a code to sign up to receive beta access within a business day after pre-ordering. To activate the code, you will need to log onto bungie.net/beta and complete the redemption code process outlined on the website.
Be sure to hurry though as this is a limited time offer with a limited number of beta access codes.
Destiny takes place 700 years into the future in what is a post-apocalyptic setting. It seems tragedy arose after a prosperous period of exploration, peace, and technological advancement: the Golden Age.
The tragedy known as “the collapse” witnessed the dissolution of the colonized planets the humans wrought, an end of the Golden Age, and a near-extinction of humankind. Saved by “the traveler”, a white, spherical celestial body, only a few humans remain, on the planet Earth. The Traveler, who allowed humanity to reach the stars before, now hovers above the last human city, and its presence gives humanity, now known as the “Guardians of the City”, the ability to wield an unknown power. Now hostile aliens have occupied mankind's former colonies and civilizations and are now encroaching upon the city. It is up to you, the player to prevent the last remaining city from being destroyed.
Destiny centers around the Guardians' journey and their attempt to protect their last remaining city. They are divided into three distinct races: the Humans, Awoken, and Exo.
Humans are your best friend. They are relatable, tough, and non-complicated. They are inspired by soldiers, athletes, and action heroes. The Awoken are your relationship partners: exotic, beautiful, and mysterious, inspired by elves, vampires, ghosts, and angels. The Exo however are your worst enemy. They are sinister, powerful, and tireless. They are inspired by the undead, Bungie's own Master Chief and the Terminator.
Together, you will all embark on this epic action adventure.
Along with race, you will also be able to play class. You will be able to pick three classes: Hunters, Warlocks, and Titans. Hunters are a reconnaissance-based class based off the bounty hunters. Influences include Han Solo or the Man with No Name. Warlocks have the strength of “the Traveler” and are a form of space wizard. They are influenced by Jedis, Gandalf or Morpheus. Titans with heavy weapons and melee attacks, are intended as the traditional future soldier and inspired again by Master Chief and the stormtroopers from Star Wars and other classic space marines. Playable characters can be a combination of a guardian race and class.
You will also be given the chance to personalize, and upgrade every aspect of how you look and fight with a almost everlasting supply of armor, weapons, and visual customizations. You can take your created character into every mode, including campaigns, cooperatives, social, public, and competitive multiplayer.
Bungie has made it their mission to tell everyone interested that Destiny will take you by the hindquarters and immerse you into a wonderful experience. The universe will be “alive” as they have said it.
Yup, shocking things may happen that not even the developers can know, which to them, will help create a dynamic challenge to both Bungie and gamers alike.
If an action RPG isn't enough, the game has been described as a forever online first person shooter with massively multiplayer online or MMO elements, but it has not been described as such by Bungie. Instead they have described it as a “shared-world” shooter because of its lack of many of the characteristics of a traditional MMO game. As typical of MMO games, Destiny will instead have an on-the-fly matchmaking system that will allow players to see and interact only with other players that are “matched” to them by the actual game, which is against the tradition of players who are able to see and interact with all other players.
Destiny will have a new game engine which will provide it with a global illumination and real-time dynamic lighting that will occur on its behalf. Based off their Halo games, Destiny will be blessed with a new innovation in their “hopper” technology. This innovation allows for better player matchmaking in order to create a more natural experience in either cooperative or competitive multiplayer modes.
With a character that you create on your own, you will be able to forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customizable weapons, gear, and vehicles. You will be blown away by an unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre and breaks traditional conventions of story and cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes. The next evolution in the First-person action genre provides an amazing combination of storytelling, cooperative, competitive and public gameplay and personal activities that are all woven into an open, expansive, and persistent online world. The choice is in your hands, once you play single player or with some friends.
