Canine diabetes, like its human counterpart is on the increase in the canine world. It is a very common health problem of dogs worldwide due to the improper metabolism of insulin in the body. Insulin is secreted by the beta cells in the pancreas and that controls the levels of blood sugar in the body. As with human diabetes, there are type 1 and type 2 canine diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a result of improper secretion of insulin, whilst in type 2 diabetes the cells are resistant to the insulin that is secreted. A diabetic dog that is not well cared for by its owner could contract kidney disease or go blind. Giving your dog diabetic dog food and medications gives them the right amount of antioxidants to keep them healthy. If you are serious about your dogs' health, this is simply a must.

If your diabetic dogs are also overweight, he should follow a low-fat and low-calorie diet whereas underweight dogs should follow a balanced diet with the right amount of healthy fats.

Diabetic food must contain a certain amount of fiber as fiber slows down the process of digesting carbohydrates and also helps to maintain the glucose levels of a diabetic dog's blood.
