Diabetic Menu

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

People with diabetes should be keen on the food they eat – wrong food intake may result to spikes in their blood sugar level, and this will cause some serious trouble for diabetics.

But contrary to what many people believe, a diabetic menu is not just about taking away sweets and sugar. In fact, diabetic patients sometimes suffer from hypoglycemia or the state of having low blood sugar levels.

Carbohydrate intake is one of the things that diabetics have to control. It's because food sources that contain high amounts of carbohydrates like rice and white bread are almost instantly converted into sugar once digested. In some patients, carbohydrates are even excluded from the diabetic menu. But if your nutritionist or physician told you that you can still eat rice or white bread, it's best to take these in moderation. As much as possible, eat a variety of food – from whole grains, small portions of meat, some sweets to fruits and vegetables. Just be careful about your fruit intake as some fruits could affect your blood sugar levels.

Of course, a diabetic menu will not be complete without drinking lots of water (at least 8 glasses of water). But check first with your doctor as diabetes has certain complications like kidney problems (diabetics with renal problems are not advised to drink a lot of water as it will only put a strain on their kidneys). If possible, eat smaller portions and never skip meals. Eating small portions of food in between meals is much better than having a heavy breakfast and then skipping lunch.
