Diabetic Snacks

Diabetes is a frightening disease, but with the proper diet and exercise, it can be controlled. Many people even find that sticking one-hundred percent to a good diet and exercise plan can begin to reverse the seriousness of their diabetes.

Snacks are an important part of every diabetic’s life. Here are some suggestions for diabetic snacks to help you control your diabetes.

(Of course, always consult your doctor about the dietary choices that are right for your situation, and be sure to make note of how every snack affects your blood sugar.)

Nuts, nuts, nuts! Nuts are high in protein and very low in natural sugars. Be sure to go easy, though, because of the fat levels.

Low fat cheese is another great option. However, remember the natural sugars in milk products, so you need to eat any type of cheese in moderation. (But isn’t that true for almost all foods?)

Celery spread with just a little fat free cream cheese is a great crunchy choice! Leave off the raisins that Mom used to add, though, as dehydrated fruit is very high in sugar, so don’t use them as diabetic snacks.

Many diabetics find that they are okay to eat whole grain carbs if they always, ALWAYS have a little bit of protein with it (like low fat cheese). This means a very small serving of whole grain crackers may be a very good choice.

Popcorn is often a good choice for diabetics, and you can spice it up! If you’re bored with plain popcorn, spray it with some fat free butter spray (just a little), and add some different flavors. Maybe chili powder and paprika for something different, OR some Italian seasoning and a couple of dashes of low fat Parmesan cheese.

Hard boiled eggs or deviled eggs are very healthy in moderation. If you don’t like plain hard boiled eggs, sprinkle them with a little (no sodium) mixed seasoning.

Sugar free flavored gelatin is available in premade packs and are so good! You can also make it at home in larger quantities.

It’s often a struggle to get used to eating on a diabetic plan, but hopefully these diabetic snacks will help ease the transition. Also be sure to eat a Healthy Dinner and get some Fast and Easy Dinner Ideas.

Healthy snacks are an important part of living with diabetes and crunchy vegetables are excellent additions to the diabetes diet. People with diabetes, who also suffer from gum disease or other oral health problems, may find it difficult to eat crispy, crunchy foods like celery. I've seen many people, one they have their teeth fixed, start to lose weight because they can then eat healthy, crisp, low calorie foods.

On my blog at www.dentistryfordiabetics.com/blog I write extensively about the links between gum disease and diabetes and the importance of good oral health care in attaining diabetes control.
