Differences Between Banners and Signs

There are two major options when it comes to advertising a concept or a product/service – banners and signs. Now there are so many similarities between banners and signs that it almost seems as if they are the same thing. There is however several differences between the two that are important to know depending on what your intentions are for these forms of advertising/decoration. These differences include the size, material, and manufacture forms of each.

Size of Banners and Signs

As a general rule, banners are much larger than the average sign. For example, a sign proclaiming a sale is likely to be perhaps a window size or smaller, while a banner is usually much larger, and usually very much longer. Banners are meant to stretch a distance from left to right, whereas a sign is usually more of a smaller rectangle or square shape. This may mean a minute difference, but if you have slogan or large symbol you want, a banner may be better suited, whereas a sign may be better for individual sales, etc.

Material For Banners and Signs

Another major difference between banners and signs tend to be what the two are made from. Banners are usually made from either paper, cloth or a vinyl material, while signs can be made from a myriad of different materials, including the previously named as well as things like wood, cardboard and even hard plastic. Signs are definitely more versatile in the material than banners are, which can make a difference depending on the use intended for it. For example, a rummage sale sign might need to be something more sturdy like cardboard or wood versus a political banner at a parade.

Manufacturing Banners and Signs

The means for getting the words, images or concepts on the banners and signs is another difference that is often found in a contest between the two. Banners can be hand painted, but are usually difficult to hand paint due to their size – they are usually printed in a specialty shop of some sort as a result. Signs however, because of their smaller size, can be printed, stenciled, hand painted, and even spray painted if need be.
