Different Humidification Systems
There is a wide variety of methods that different humidifier models use to increase the humidity of the surrounding air. The many problems that result from dryness such as wood damage and health risks have been well documented. These issues tend to arise in cold climate conditions which are often associated with dry air since less moisture is retained in cold air.
An evaporative filter is the most commonly used type of humidifier filter and is usually made of foam, paper or cloth that is kept wet with water from a tank. The water evaporates into the dry air that is forced through the filter with a fan which moistens the air. It is a self regulating system that is very basic in concept but is very effective.
A cool mist humidifier is one of the most typical type of humidifier. This type of humidifier uses an evaporative filter and is typical of small table top units. What differentiates a cool mist humidifier from other models is the lack of heating. It makes for the perfect humidification system in climates that are warm and does not require the air to be heated. It is generally regarded as very safe especially for use around small children or infants.
A type of humidifier that is known for energy efficiency and minimal noise is the ultrasonic humidifier. In these units, a high frequency vibration produces very small water droplets which are released into the air to add humidity. Most ultrasonic humidifiers offer a feature that allows the user to set a desired humidity level. Once that humidity level is defined, the unit automatically shuts off when the humidity meter reaches the target setting.
For those who desire less maintenance, a filter free humidifier does not use a filter and therefore does not require replacement parts. This is a good way to save money by not having to purchase replacement humidifier filters. General routine cleaning and refilling the water reservoir is the only maintenance a filter less humidifier requires.
From filter less humidifiers to units with evaporative filters, it is important for any buyer to know what is available. Matching the size of the air space that the humidifier will be used in with the correctly sized unit is a must for optimal results.
