Different Methods For Termite Control

By | May 14, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Termites are a menace that can spoil your nicely done woodwork and gardens. If you are suffering from termites in your house or if you are afraid of termites infecting your house, then you need to start working on controlling them right away. Controlling the termites need not involve some expensive termite control agency. It is possible to control the termites through any of the following 4 methods

  1. chemical termite control
  2. cultural termite control
  3. Physical termite control and
  4. Biological termite control

Chemical control involves use of chemicals to a.prevent the termites coming into the premises and b.kill the termites that have already come into the premises. There are several chemicals that can be applied at the entrance of the premises. These chemicals give out an odor that repels the termites and hence termites do not enter inside. If termites have already entered inside, then you will do well to contaminate some food items like bread with termite killing chemicals and place them at a number of places. The termites will die after eating the food.

At one of time the chemical control methods were the most popular ones as they act really fast. However over a period of time the other methods have gained popularity as people have become more aware about the negative impacts of chemicals on the environment.

Chemical termite control has some negative side effect and hence it is preferable to go for cultural termite control. Cultural termite control involves steps that will make it less attractive for termites to enter into our premises. It often involves changes to the house architecture itself and should be used in consultation with experts. Allowing some other less harmful insects like ants also works as an effective protection against termites.

Physical control methods are not that suitable for do it yourself solutions as they involve some specialized methods. Some of these methods include increasing the temperature to above 45 degrees for an hour and then taking it down to below zero. Most of the termites are incapable of coping with such extreme temperature and die because of it. Even if some of the adults survive this extreme temperature, they lose the reproductive ability. As a result once the existing generation dies the natural death, there are no offspring to carry on the destructive activity. As stated above, these physical control methods are not something that you should try to do it on your own. It is better to rely on professional pest control service for this. You must go through a large number of termites pictures so as to be able to identify a termite when you see one.

The biological termite control methods are one of the best methods to deploy on your own. This method relies on natural food chain to get rid of termites. Natural enemies of termites like ant are allowed to grow in the backyard. The ant kills the termite thereby getting us rid of them. Destruction of these biological protection is one of the worst side effects of the chemical methods.

Any one of these four methods can be deployed by you to fight the termites effectively. Which one to use should be decided based on urgency of the situation and your ability to handle the method. For example if termites are only starting to show up at your place then you should go for a biological method while if there too many termites already then you need to go for chemical method.Whichever method you use, compare the termite treatment cost of the method with the cost of chemical treatment method.
