Ideas for His and Hers Wedding Bands

A wedding is the beginning of the official union of two people and his and hers wedding bands are the symbol that signifies its longevity. It’s a fairly new practice. The wedding ring used to be worn only by women in the ancient times. This is because jewels were worn by women to establish a man’s ownership of a woman. This means that when a woman is wearing a piece of jewellery that is a known “style” of a certain lineage, the woman is already spoken for and cannot be approached by other men.

That has changed, of course. Now, a ring is a symbol of commitment of two people to each other and a declaration of that commitment to the society. This is why his and hers wedding bands are also becoming more stylish. Simple wedding bands are not enough for some. Hence, the creation of the concept of his and hers wedding bands.

Different Materials

Here are some materials worth looking at for his and hers wedding bands that will look good both in male and female:

  • Platinum – the color is neutral, it will look manly on men and elegant on a woman
  • Gold – not white gold but gold. Believe it or not, while gold looks more feminine so it’s better to settle for gold
  • Palladium – this is the most eco-friendly of all metals you can use for a band
  • Silver – if you need something more affordable, sterling silver will do just fine. Just have it cleaned regularly
  • Tungsten – like the silver, tungsten is more affordable. This is also ideal for “unconventional” couples because of its dark colors. It is popular among “geeks”. The metal is scratch resistant and does not accumulate rust.

Styles for Wedding Bands

Style is something a woman my need to compromise with. There are a lot of elegant styles that a woman can wear that were never made for men.

  • Eternity for Women, Milgrain Edge for Men - Eternity rings for women were styled specifically for women and was never made to be worn by both men and women. The milgrain edge eternity ring is an adaptation of the eternity rings for women to make it wearable by both men and women. A small version of the ring would make it a delicate and elegant wedding ring for the wife. A large version would look be a masculine yet elegant wedding ring for the husband. Also, while eternity rings are more often than not associated with a wedding anniversary or birth of a child, it has recently begun to increase its popularity as a wedding ring for men and women.
  • Plain gold/Platinum/Palladium Wedding band – this is the most flexible style. You may, if you want, engrave your vow (or a phrase in your vow) with each other on the band. It may be:
  • Dome Wedding Band
  • Flat Wedding Band
  • Two-Tone/Three-Tone - you may combine two types of metal to have some style. From there, you can have it style any way you want. The women may opt to have gem on hers and the male may go for a plain one. Both will still be stylish. Check out the images below.

Same Elements Different Details

Although matching wedding rings is a lovely concept, one should always also consider that wedding rings, no matter how lovely or well-matched are only symbols. The important part that one should never forget is what these rings represent.

  • Same Metal Different Design - Another kind of matching wedding rings set is to simply have the same metal for the ring but differ somewhat in design. For example, the husband’s ring could be a plain platinum band while the wife has a diamond or three embedded in her platinum ring to give it a more feminine feel.
  • Same Style Different Details - Another way to look at this style is to have similar features in both rings but inherently having its own style. One fine example of this kind of his and hers wedding ring design is the Claddagh ring for men and women. A woman’s Claddagh ring can be made with stones set as the heart and crown while a man’s can be simply engraved. Technically they have the same design but different applications done on the design.
  • Complementary Rings - Another type of matching wedding rings is to have a design that makes the two rings complement each other or belong to each other as a half to the whole. What this means is that the wedding rings can be designed in such a way that when they are put together, they form one ring. Although this type of wedding ring is innovative and distinct, it is really hard to come up with a design that would be approved by both husband and wife. Also, it might be harder to get two rings of different sizes to join together especially if the discrepancy in sizes is huge.

Although matching wedding rings is a lovely concept, one should always also consider that wedding rings, no matter how lovely or well-matched are only symbols. The important part that one should never forget is what these rings represent.
