Regrowing Hereditary Hair Loss

There are many and varied reasons for why some of us lose our hair; it can occur at any time of life and effect both men and women. Most commonly it is a genetic condition, but can also be caused by stress or vitamin deficiency. In recent years there have been significant developments which have led to a whole host of medicinal solutions proven to help hair regrow and slow down hereditary thinning, as well as surgical procedures (commonly known as hair restoration). However, chemical and surgical options aren’t for everyone. If you would prefer to discover how to regrow hair naturally, there are a few valuable home remedies for hair loss that are well worth a try.

Diet to stimulate hair regrowth

Meat, fish and dairyHair is made of protein. It is therefore extremely important to include plenty of protein in your diet to help regrow hair. You may consider drinking protein shakes made from whey, but there are plenty of foods that can provide the right levels for good nutrition; meat and dairy are particularly rich in protein.

Ensure you eat a diet rich in Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids (found in oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, as well as flax seeds and leafy vegetables), as these oils are essential for regrowth.

Drinking at least 2 litres of water a day will keep your scalp hydrated and healthy, because the hair shaft is made up of a quarter water. If this level reduces, due to insufficient intake of fluids, the regeneration of follicles can be effected.

Vitamins to help hair growth

Vitamins to help growth

Vitamin C is essential for healthy hair as it is required for the healthy development of collagen. You can take a supplement of around 1,00 to 3,00 mg a day, but it is always better to take in vitamins and nutrients through the food you consume; eat plenty of citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons and try to include some green and red peppers, kiwi fruit and guava in your diet. An added benefit of vitamin C is that it helps the body absorb vitamin B12 from food; B12 can be used to prevent loss and fight against premature ageing of the hair.

Biotin is one of the best hair loss prevention vitamins. A severe Biotin deficiency may even lead to the eyelashes and eyebrows falling out. To help hair regrow naturally, choose a good quality biotin supplement; you will find that your locks will be thicker, less fragile and brittle and that the follicles will be healthier and stronger.

B Vitamins are some of the most powerful for healthy and luscious locks. The natural hair cycle requires the complex B vitamin and biotin. B3 (or Niacin) is particularly effective for increasing circulation to the scalp. Because the nutrients work synergistically, look for a B complex supplement that includes all the B vitamins to keep your hair healthy; Niacin works best when combined with Biotin.

Iron reduces hair loss. Iron is a mineral rather than a vitamin and can be found in high levels in foods such as apricots and liver. Like the B vitamins, it increases circulation. Healthy blood flow to the scalp promotes growth. Make sure you check with a doctor before increasing your iron intake, as surplus levels of iron can actually exacerbate the problem; it's essential that you get the balance just right.

Vitamin A can be taken to help hair restoration as it controls the production of sebum on the scalp (excess sebum is a primary cause of hair falling out) and stimulates follicle regeneration, but it must be consumed with care. Because it is an oxidant, too much Vitamin A can result in toxicity and actually be a cause of hair loss. Foods rich in Vitamin A include broccoli, spinach, peanuts, milk, cabbage and eggs, so start by trying to incorporate some of these into your daily diet.

Zinc deficiency can cause hair loss. An optimum supply of zinc maintains healthy cell regeneration, protein synthesis and like Vitamin A controls the production of sebum on the scalp. There are some really high quality zinc supplements available.

Vitamin D can improve regeneration of the follicles in that it is beneficial for the healthy functioning of the entire body. It is best used in conjunction with other hair loss prevention vitamins.

Vitamin E is another great stimulant for good circulation to the scalp, essential to help hair regrow naturally. Cereals, safflower oil, soybean oil and almonds are rich in Vitamin E so it may be possible to up your intake by making small adjustments to your diet.

Natural home remedies for hair loss

Scalp MassagingMassaging oils into the scalp can be a powerful stimulant to regrow hair naturally. The blood supply to the scalp will improve, thus maximizing circulation, stimulating follicular regeneration and nourishing the roots. The best oils to use are:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Henna
  • Rosemary
  • Lavendar

Heat the oil a little and use the finger-tips firmly on the scalp. Do this about once a week.

Coconut milk is a great natural conditioner; leave it in your hair for around half an hour, then rinse and style as normal. Do this every other day until you notice an improvement in your hair regrowth. Then switch to using the treatment once a week.

Apply a few drops of almond oil to your hair once a day to stimulate natural regrowth.

Coconut oil mixed together with a mashed-up avocado can be spread over the head to stop flaking (or dandruff) and boost your hair’s health.

What to avoid to reduce hair loss

Smoking can restrict blood circulation, which is essential for the natural regrowth of healthy hair.

Cutting down on your consumption of alcoholic beverages can reduce hair loss.

If you currently use a chemical shampoo, switch to a herbal option. The harsh chemicals found in many brand shampoos and conditioners can have a harmful impact on your scalp. A healthy scalp is essential for encouraging a good hair cycle. In particular, avoid any products that contain sodium lauryl sulphate, as this can harm the hair follicles.

Avoid blow-drying and using extreme heat on the hair. Styling devices, such as straighteners or curling tongs, can cause premature hair loss and negatively effect the condition of your existing hair, making it weak and vulnerable to falling out. It is much better to let the hair dry naturally.

When facing the problem of encouraging healthy follicles, it is important to look at all the options before turning to chemical and medical solutions, such as Minoxidil or Propecia which can have unwanted side effects or opting for a hair restoration procedure. In general, keep your hair healthy with regular cuts and a gentle shampoo and conditioning regime. Don’t try and do all the things suggested in this article at once; experiment with different solutions until you find the one that helps you to regrow your hair naturally.
