Distracting Addictive Behaviors
Some people over eat, some people find pleasure in smoking, others find it in drinking. They're all addictive behaviors to many but in real terms, they're distracters. Distracters from the way we feel. Sometimes we aren't even aware of the feelings and sensations that we run away from by doing these activities. But they're there, hidden behind our thoughts and in many cases our realties. These negative feelings and sensations are in our unconscious. We can know something isn't right, but it's as if we just can't put our finger on it. We only know that we need to distract ourselves from these issues by smoking, drinking, gambling or overeating, and other addictive patterns.
Typically these negative sensations and feelings, distracting us – are from issues in our past that haven't been consciously dealt with. Through the means of hypnosis and hypnotherapy we can get to these sources of pain and deal with them. And when we deal with them in many cases, the effect (the addictive behaviour) leaves us. These sources typically range from something that happened in our childhood or a traumatic moment or a series of traumatic moments that occurred later in life. When we haven't dealt with the issue or issues, these issues become locked away in our unconscious. In our subconscious where we are typically looking to solve or fix the problem but can't. And this inability is the source for this pain – the pain that we look to distract ourselves from.
I recently had a client who wouldn't be able to sleep so he would jump in the car and take a drive for 80km. He says that as soon as he gets in the car, his mind frees up and the anxiety dissipates. The reason for this is because the subconscious mind has to get into gear so to speak, take control and operate the functioning of the car. It no longer has to worry about or think about the issues that are causing unconscious pain.
In many cases it's only when we deal with these issues that we are able to deal with the addictive negative behaviour. Sometimes it can be beneficial to accept the reality of having this feeling or sensations or anxiety and see where acceptance takes you. In my clinic Hypnotherapy Melbourne, many times that's enough to deal with the issue at hand and gives the mind freedom to move along and forget about the strategy of dealing with distracting addictive behaviors to help you quit smoking for example.
