DoFollow and NoFollow Link Building: An Overview

By Edited Mar 31, 2016 0 0

Search engine optimization or SEO is the optimization of sites or specific Web pages in sites for major search engines such as MSN, Yahoo!, Google, and Bing. SEO is important because a high ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs) means more hits and consequently greater return on investment (ROI).

One of the most effective SEO techniques is link building. This SEO technique is popular because;

  • Creating and maintaining links is cheap and often free of charge.
  • Link building is White Hat SEO and there is no risk to your website.
  • Most links are permanent (they live for as long as a website is live).
  • Links bring in a targeted Web traffic.
  • Links are effective and cheap advertising tools.

You could add links in articles meant for article submission directories, in press releases, or in your blog, in a blog comment. You could also have your links in anchor text. Links are categorized as DoFollow and NoFollow. The two options have significant differences that you should consider so that you can choose the one that is most appropriate for your SEO campaign.

With DoFollow links, your site receives the vote of the Web master, which is important in that it increases your ranking in search engine results pages. With NoFollow links, you do not get any vote and so the link does not affect your ranking. This means you should stick to DoFollow links if you are doing the link building for SEO purposes. A NoFollow link does not come with ads that are unrelated to such forums as weblogs, but a DoFollow link can have such links.

Google and other major search engines consider DoFollow link building to be a Black Hat SEO tactic, just like keyword spamming and spamdexing. NoFollow link building was developed by Google to kill DoFollow links. It therefore means that DoFollow links come with a link of your website or specific Web pages in the website being filtered out by search engines.

You can use a NoFollow link with large websites like google.com, cnn.com, and digg.com since such big sites are already popular and there is nothing you can do to break them.

Forum owners accept DoFollow links in the signature only, but you can do NoFollow link building in the body of the post.

NoFollow link building is popular in blogging since the blog comments that readers leave can have NoFollow links. Search engines love fresh content and these comments will therefore help in your SEO campaign.

You can determine the type of link you have by checking through the Firefox add-ons like Status Search for the page source.

You should have your links built by a link building service. Hiring a link building service gives you professionalism, it offers unparalleled convenience, and it saves you money since it means you do not need to hire an in-house IT team.
