This is a very good question that gets asked a lot. The answer to it is yes if you have the
natural hair implantation procedure and no if you have artificial
implants. Just like the name implies,
when you get natural implants you are getting hair units that have been
transplanted from your scalp or some other part of the body. Artificial grafts, on the other hand, are
manufactured from a man made material and are non-organic.
Artificial implants are strings of hair like material
that are made to look like hair shafts.
A cosmetic surgeon will tie a knot on the end of this string and this
will act as an anchor in the scalp. A
small hole or incision is made in the skin of the bald spot and the knot is
inserted with a medical device. The
artificial hair is left long until the procedure is finished and then they are
all cut in the style the customer prefers.
The implants will never get longer so it is important that anyone
styling the hair does not try to trim it.
If the artificial hair becomes too short the only cure is to redo the hair implantation procedure and add more hairs.
When natural hair implants are used the surgeon will
actually remove growing hair units from either an area of that scalp that has
good hair growth or another part of the body.
When these units are removed they are taken intact with all the parts
needed to grow hair shaft material. Each
individual hair follicle unit is prepared for insertion and then the cosmetic
surgeon will carefully place the hairs in a way that matches the surrounding
hair.
Within a few weeks the transplanted follicles will start
to attach to the blood supply and will begin transferring nutrients and waste
along with metabolite gases. This
transfer allows the hair root to start manufacturing the needed hair shaft
material and the hair starts to grow.
For the first few months the growth is very light but it continues to
thicken until the hairs match the others surrounding the treated area.
As time goes on the hair implant in the formally bald
area continues to grow and it becomes impossible to tell the procedure was
done. The hair implants will continue to
grow for years as if they had always been in that area of the scalp.
