Do It Yourself Home Energy Improvement Projects That Are Quick and Cheap

By Edited Jan 18, 2016 0 0

I enjoy fixing up my home so my friends and family can enjoy themselves when they are there. I do not, however, believe in spending a lot of money to do so. I spend a lot of time watching various home improvement shows on television, and I now consider myself a DIYer, or a Do-It-Yourself type of person. My main objective whenever I am planning one of these projects is to find a project that I can do by myself, is inexpensive to complete, and is fast. Although I love working around the house, I do not want to spend a lot of time doing it.

Most of the projects that I tackle are things that I can do around the home to save on my cooling and heating expenses. There are actually some things that you can do to get the ball rolling that is free or extremely cheap. Do you know what they are?

Change the Way You and Your Family Do Things

The first step in saving the amount you spend in energy bills every month is to get the entire family involved. I have to go behind my kids often and turn off the lights and television when they leave the room. So, do you know what I did? I created a game. I promised them that every time they remembered to turn off the television or light when they left a room, I would give them a star. This star could then be exchanged for a prize at the end of the month once I saw the electricity bill. The prizes could range from money to movie tickets, or something else from their wish lists. This really set a fire behind them, and I no longer worry about walking into an empty room with the lights still on.

Buy Energy Saving Light Bulbs

I have really run out of excuses as to why I have not brought these light bulbs. The amount of electricity my household uses would be cut in half, and they still emit the same amount of light. That is definitely a win-win in my book. The bulbs are also quite cute in my opinion, and add a bit of décor. So, they are also handling double duty.

Invest in Remote Control Sockets

My family is definitely a gadget family. If you walked into my home, you would see a wide array of laptops, iPads, tablets, and televisions. All of them would be plugged in the wall sockets, all of them on standby. I did not realise that by not completely shutting off these things, my electricity bill was increasing by £70 every year. A family meeting did not resolve the issue, so I invested in some remote control sockets. This way I can turn off a lot of items at one time without having to turn everything off individually.

I Got a Smart Meter

This has been a great money saver for me. I can see in real time just how much energy my home is using. I have saved a lot of money just by installing this in my home.
