Do You Need an ADF Scanner?

From copying magazine articles to old photos of great grandparents, scanners are tools that have many uses in dorm rooms, offices, and homes. Scanners are a great way to organize printed material or old photographs in digital form saving valuable space in offices and homes. You can even digitize those old vacation slides to ensure that those memories are around for many more years to come.

There are a couple of different types of scanners the most common being flat bed scanners and film scanners. Film scanners do exactly what they sound like they do and that is scan film and slides of varying sizes but they are not useful for documents. Flat bed scanners are recognizable to most people as they look like the top portion of a typical copy machine and work very similar to those machines.

Because flat bed scanners look much like copiers they are best suited for similar jobs. They work great for scanning contracts, pages from books, or a picture of your kids to use as your desktop picture for a computer. Film scanners are great for archiving those old rolls of 35mm film or vacation slides that you may have show off to your friends with a slide projector.

To help increase productivity scanners have taken some cues from those high priced copiers you find in some offices. ADF scanners or automatic feed scanners are a great way to help digitize paper records while keeping productivity high.

The ADF feature helps increase productivity by allowing there to be an almost set and forget type of system. It does this by allowing you to setup the scanning software to scan an entire batch of papers and have the3 feeder automatically feed, scan, and eject each document as it is scanned. This of course does not help with scanning the pages of books because they are not individual sheets of paper.

People on the road sometimes think they need to give up the luxuries of some of the technology available in the office. That is just not the case as portable printers and scanners are available to help keep productivity high even when on the road.

Photographers of all levels will enjoy the benefits of a film or flatbed scanner. Both will allow them to not only archive their old photos and film for storage but also for use in Photoshop which has become the de facto standard as the tool to use for the digital darkroom. It also gives you a chance to fix some of the problems with old photos like fading, red eye, or dust and dirt that may have been on the lens or film when the picture was taken

There are many uses for a scanner for the professional to the student who is tired of keeping paper copies from reference material.
