Taking Biotin for hair loss problems is one of several natural options to treat the condition. But is it the most effective? Balding (or alopecia) is often predetermined by genetics, but other factors can play a significant part in determining the rate at which you will lose your hair. For example, using a harsh chemical shampoo and conditioner can be detrimental to hair regrowth. However, the best results are often gained by adjusting your diet to prevent hair loss; taking on extra nutrients and vitamins, such as Biotin, either through the food you eat or in the form of a supplement should be a priority.

The aim of any non-surgical hair loss treatment is to stimulate circulation to the scalp, prevent further thinning and encourage regrowth. Several vitamins, minerals and nutrients such as niacin, Vitamins A, C, D and E, as well as Zinc and Iron have been proven to help naturally regrow hair. But most powerful for the treatment of an unhealthy scalp, are the B vitamins.

What is Biotin?

Originally known as vitamin H, Vitamin B7 or Biotin is part of the B complex family. Its primary function is to turn sugar into energy. It is also extremely important for the regeneration of skin cells and is used in the process of synthesising fat; fat is an essential component of every human cell.

Hair loss and Vitamin Deficiency

A Biotin deficiency can cause several problems, including seborrheic dermatitis. Optimum levels of Biotin protect the nervous system and prevent seizures and loss of muscle tone. Biotin is also a vital component of the nerves; having enough Biotin can significantly reduce stress levels; stress is a significant cause of premature thinning of the hair. So hair loss and vitamin deficiency are inherently linked. Lack of Biotin affects the functioning of the nerves that support the efficient functioning of the follicles, hair becomes weaker from the roots and may begin to fall out.

As well as alopecia on the head, other signs that you may have a Biotin deficiency include loss of eyelashes and eyebrows, brittle fingernails that break and chip easily, dermatitis (a red itchy facial rash) and conjunctivitis.

Does Biotin for hair loss really work?

Biotin is one of the best vitamins to stop hair loss. It strengthens the follicles by supporting the surrounding nerves that keep them functioning properly and maintain a healthy hair cycle. But more than this, if taken at optimum levels, Biotin has been proven to actually regrow hair naturally and can even reverse early signs of greying.

As well as medical treatments such as Minoxidil and Propecia, many of the best hair loss clinics in the world advise the supplementation of Biotin as a hair loss solution for men and women.

Recommended Dosage of Biotin

There is no evidence that taking Biotin for hair loss can cause toxicity, so it is safe to take daily doses of 60mg a day over a sustained period of time. Hair restoration has been recorded in subjects who supplemented as much as 500mg a day; it is not advisable to take such high levels for long periods of time. However, there are no known side effects of Biotin.

As well as taking a supplement, there are various organic shampoos and conditioners available that are rich in Biotin, which may prove effective as a means of supporting your daily vitamin dosage.

It is also advisable to try and up your intake of Biotin through the foods you consume. Although it is fairly difficult to find in food, it is present in fairly high levels in peanuts, leafy green vegetables, egg yolk, liver and berries.

Diet to prevent hair loss

It is essential that Biotin is used as part of a healthy diet and is most effective for the treatment of hair loss when used in conjunction with other B vitamins; foods such as eggs, meat, fish and cereals are all great sources of a variety of B-vitamins. A diet rich in protein and silica can also help combat balding; eating plenty of grains and oat, as well as meats and dairy products can provide these.
