Dog Food Containers
Disinfecting your dog food containers frequently may save your best friend's life. Many factors cause pet food to become infected by bacteria that could be harmful to your dog. The frequent dog food recalls should be enough to put you on high alert when it comes to disinfecting your dog food containers. After all, this is something you can do easily and often.
Some pet owners unknowingly placed recalled dog food into storage containers. Those containers will have to be disinfected thoroughly in order to avoid salmonella and disease to spread to cats, dogs and members of the human family. Always pay attention when you hear about those pet food recalls in the news!
When purchasing food containers, be sure that the containers are airtight and durable. Dry dog food should not be able to absorb moisture as this could cause bacteria to grow, leading to illness. Wet food containers should also seal properly for the same reason. Be sure to open wet dog food only when needed and if you are not giving it all to your dog immediately, store the balance in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
When there is a recall, the contaminated food is no longer produced; however some retailers may still unwittingly be selling the contaminated product. If you fear that you have bought the contaminated food, dispose of it immediately and take the precautions described below to ensure that your dog does not get sick.
To protect yourself from contracting salmonella poisoning, put on a pair of disposable kitchen gloves and rinse all the crumbs from the dog food containers. Mix one part bleach with four parts water and use this mixture to scrub the inside and the outside of the container thoroughly. Remember to rinse out the bleach solution well to protect your dogs' health.
It is suggested that you use a clean rag or a sponge that you are willing to throw away afterwards, as bacteria could be hard to remove from the rag or sponge. Rinse out the food containers and rinse thoroughly and then give it another wash with antibacterial soap.
Also wash surfaces such as the floor or the cupboard where the dog food containers are stored with bleach and water solution. Then, relax: you've just made an important contributions to protecting your dogs' health.
