Dog is man's best friend. But if not trained well, it can be man's worst enemy. Dogs are used mostly for security. The army and police use dogs to sniff out drugs and to warn of imminent danger. Dogs are also used in homes not only as pets but also to provide security. If a dog is well-trained, it can also be entered in dog shows to compete against other trained dogs. In such competitions, obedience is one of the main requirements.

The breed of the dog also matters. The more intelligent and obedient dogs are easier to train and can be trained by individuals at home. Examples of intelligent dogs are the Rottweiler, Papillon, Australian Cattle dog, Labrador retriever, Sheepdog, Doberman, German Shepherd, Poodle, and the Collie.

The least intelligent dog breeds and hardest to train are the Afghan hounds, Bulldogs, cow Chows, Blood hounds, Mastiffs, Basset hounds and Beagles.

There are individuals capable of training dogs for such purposes but at a dog obedience school, professionals can train the dogs for a variety of uses. Though they are basically trained to follow the sit, stay, fetch and down commands. But first the trainer has to establish a healthy dog-owner relationship. Cruelty should also be avoided as this can halt the training process and create a tyrant dog.

At the dog obedience school, obedience is achieved through the various training techniques. These include dog whispering, clicker training, marker training, reward training, collar and leash and positive reinforcement. Different techniques are used for different dog breeds and that is determined by the professional trainers.

What the trainers do is basically enhance communication between the dog and the dog-owner and assist in prevention of disobedient behavior such as barking, digging and jumping. They also set rules for the dog so that it can learn to be a part of society. This will in turn teach them how to relate to other dogs, human beings and other animals. They can therefore know how to act in different situations.

After training at a dog obedience school, your dog can now be ready for more advanced training and the owner is also able to read the dog and anticipate its needs. Trust and respect is also developed. This prevents cases of power struggles between the dog and dog-owner. Therefore if the dog decides to run off, it will immediately retreat if it recognizes your voice and respects you. This lack of power struggle can also be manipulated to instruct the dog when to attack and when to back down.
