The importance of play has spurred on the development of a vast array of different dog toys. Dog toys are an extremely important part of any dog owner's arsenal of pet supplies. With the help of a dog toy as simple as a wooden stick, you can think up any number of interactive games to play with your dog. The use of a dog toy is a great way to have fun and exercize with your canine companion.
Healthy dog Toys
Certain types of dog toys have greater health benefits than others. While all dog toys serve to keep your dog occupied and thus mentally healthy, certain dog toys achieve this while also getting your dog much needed physical excersize as well. A couple great examples of these types of dog toy are the frisbee, ball, and tug toy. These dog toys engage your dog in a physical activity, weather it's fetching the frisbee or ball, or playing "tug of war" with the tug toy. Small, indoor dogs are especially at risk of becoming lazy, fat, and overly bored if not properly exercized. Remember, and active dog is a happy dog, but time for rest is important too.Another type of healthy dog toy is the classic chew toy. Dogs are at their core predatory animals, and as such have a strong desire to bite and chew on things. Dog chew toys such as the dog bone, and the popular Kong Dog Toy help your dog work out some of it's bitey desires in a safe and healthy way. Rubber and latex dog cheww toys also help to clean your dogs teeth and gums, keeping them healthy and your dogs breath fresh.
What ever dog toy you choose, you must also make sure that it is safe for your dog. A great example of this is small dog bones and balls being given to comparatively large dogs. This can cause a vary dangerous choking hazard for your dog, as small dog toys can be easily swallowed accidentally during play. Also, easily destroyed dog toys can be ripped into small pieces that can also be swallowed. Overly hard toys can be hazardous as well. If a dog bites an overly hard dog toy too forcefully, it may chip a tooth, resulting in pain for your dog and your wallet.
