Don't Overlook The Need To File A Car Accident Claim

By | Dec 13, 2009 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Many times being involved in a car accident tends to make one be more preoccupied with medical related matters and this can lead to forgetting about the need to file a car accident claim. This is a pity because unless you file your claim in time you will have wasted valuable time and this can cost you dear. Of course, your primary concern is going to be in dealing with your own physical condition and then if you have time to pause and think you will do well to also be worried about filing a claim for compensation for losses and personal injuries.

In case your car has been extensively damaged then getting the necessary repairs is going to prove to be very costly. This is why filing a timely car accident claim is to your advantage. There is no sense in believing (quite erroneously) that filing the claim is a complicated issue because nothing can be further from the truth.

The first step that you should take after being involved in an accident is to remain at the scene of the accident and provide the police with your version about what took place and what the circumstances were that led to the accident. Only if you need emergency medical aid should you allow yourself to be taken away from the scene of the accident.

Next, you should call up the authorities including the police and also the medical facilities. This should be done immediately as it will ensure that the police and medical aid people arrive at the accident site and can make their investigations before any evidence can be tampered with.

Make sure that you note down the names of the police officers and wait till the ambulance arrives to take care of injuries. Be sure to also make notes about what the medical team recommended regarding further treatment as it is information that can prove to be vital when filing your claim with the insurance company.

After the police and the ambulance have arrived you must then do your own information gathering which means noting down the names and addresses of the other party that was involved in the accident and also jot down the name of witnesses. In addition you should jot down the license number and make as well as model of the other vehicle(s) and take down the other party's insurance information and the VIN number of the other vehicles that were involved in the mishap.

It is also a good idea to take photographs of the accident site as the photographs you take can prove to be important as items of evidence that can be shown to the judge during the court proceedings. You must also get in touch with your insurance agent/company without any delay and in fact you are duty bound to inform the insurance company about having been involved in an accident.

Last but not least, be sure to hire a good car accident lawyer who can help take your car accident claims forward in the right direction. Such lawyers are well trained and experienced in handling the insurance companies as well as third parties as well as can take care of dealing with the law enforcement agencies.

Great article.
I agree that if you get injured in a car accident, you should not forget to make a personal injury claim.
If you don’t make a claim, you might end up paying for your own medical expenses out of your own pocket.
