Don't Ever Have Another Bad Trip To The Dentist
Not only are most people fearful of going to see the dentist, most of us can't stand our current dentist either! And these are generally people that we go in to seeyear in year out. People who we rely on to reach into our mouths and drill into our teeth. But if we consider the reasons why we dislike our dentists, we might find that we have ourselves to blame. How are they supposed to care about you when all you do is stroll in, lay down in the dentist's chair, and expect them to perform their business? If you follow a few simple steps, you can discover dentists who will be a good fit for you.
So don't take it the wrong way when I tell you that, you always want to start things off by requesting anxiolytic medication. Try to sound as reasonable as you can, tell them about your dental anxiety, and ask them for some medicine to help you out with it. Most dentists will have no problem doing this, as dental anxiety is extremely common.
You may find that there are some very nice side benefits to using this approach. As you might expect, the medicine you take will soothe your anxiety. You'll notice a tremendous benefit from this all by itself. That's why sedation dentists are becoming so popular.
But on top of that, you will find out what kind of person your new dentist is. Because a dentist who won't help you with your anxiety doesn't care whether or not you feel comfortable. Can you imagine doing things the usual way? It could take years to figure this out the hard way. Just imagine how such a dentist is going to respond to your pain after a major dental procedure. One of the most important traits that a dentist can have is ordinary sympathy for his patients' feelings. This one question will show you in no uncertain terms whether or not your dentist has this.
By establishing this type of rapport immediately at the outset of your relationship, you change the nature of your future interactions. People forget that dentists are just regular people. Unless you bring your feelings and comfort to their attention, they'll have no reason to be thinking about it. And you will feel more comfortable because you know that you can ask for help and receive it. Most people feel powerless at the hands of their dentist, but with one tiny maneuver you've pre-empted that entire problem.
The second technique that we'll discuss also centers around changing the way you communicate with your dentist. This time, you'll position yourself as someone who needs information in addition to treatment. If you've found a really superb dentist, then this process will go very smoothly. If not, then that is all the more reason why you need to follow this procedure. So before you mindlessly sit down and subject yourself to the poking and prodding of a stranger, wait for them in another chair or standing up. You only need to spend a moment or two talking with them. Use that time to find out if they have any special skills or interests within the field of dentistry. You may find out that you now have access to an emergency dentist and you never knew it.
This may be the first time in your life that you ever really assessed whether a dentist's personality would be a good fit for you. I can't understand why this isn't more common. Every healthcare professional needs to have a good rapport with their patients, and dentists are no different. This can make a huge difference in your level of satisfaction.
Plus, when you've chatted in a normal, personable way, the dentist is better able to care about you as an individual. They will understand you better, and also feel understood by you. With these increased feelings of connectedness come a more human dentistry experience and a higher quality of care.
