Don't Delay Your Domain Name Registration

By | Nov 2, 2011 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Domain names are the road signs of the Internet. Whilst computers understand long blocks of numbers called IP addresses to find their way around the Internet, people use familiar words and brands called domain names.

In order to own your own address on the web for your website or email address to call home you must complete a process called a domain name registration. Whilst it may sound complicated, the procedure has actually been made very easy. You will need to know the domain name you want to register, or to use an availability checker such as GoDaddy domain tools. This will allow you to locate and complete a domain name registration through a simple wizard. Most of the information you will need is simple, such as your name, address and so on. There may be a few technical details required, depending on how you are registering your web address.

If you are registering a domain as part of a web hosting package, the company providing this service will often handle all of the technical details for you, without you even realising it is happening. If, on the other hand, you are looking to register your domain name with one company and buy hosting from another you will usually need one of two pieces of information to make the two services work together. The first option is name server addresses. These normally look something like ns1.hostingprovider.com and ns2.hostingprovider.com where 'hostingprovider' is the name of the company providing your web hosting service. The second option is something called an A record. Remember the IP addresses we referred to at the beginning of the article? We're going to provide one of these numbers, which is four blocks of numbers between 0 and 255 separated by periods (e.g. 30.212.102.14). That may all sound like nonsense, but the good news is your web hosting provider will give you this information, and all you need to do is key it into the domain name registration process, or call your domain registrar support line if you get stuck.

Domain name registration takes just a few minutes, but to see your website on the Internet (if it's already built) can take up to 72 hours in extreme cases. Usually however, a few hours will be enough to see the website magically appearing!
