If you can sew in a straight line on a sewing machine then you can make home- made gifts for Christmas or Birthdays or any occasion at all. Finding that special idea is easier than you think, just download free sewing patterns then make and give as gifts.

What could be simpler? This is a great idea for the stay at home mothers with young children to look after. You can sew to your heart's content while they are asleep. If they are older you can still sew while they are playing safely with their toys in the same room as you. Caution: If you have to leave the room for a moment, make sure that you turn the power off before leaving. We would not want them to hurt themselves.

Home sewn gifts

There are thousands of things that you can make if you have a sewing machine. If you are a beginner then why not try sewing simple toys made from felt for the youngsters.

Make Pot Holders

This is a good thing to learn with. Cut out a two squares of material about 250 cm square sew up three sides, turn inside out. You need to have a thicker piece of material inside, slightly smaller that the two outside pieces. Slide this inside now turn the edges in and stitch open side. Stitch a little strip of material to form a loop and stitch this on one corner so it can be hung near the stove.

Christmas Stockings

This is also easy to make; cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of a stocking or sock. For the front see through part you can use any sort of netting even an old curtain or onion bag if you cannot find anything else. Cut this out to match your cardboard cutout. Now stitch the two together. Then simply add the little goodies and knickknacks. It does not have to be perfect as young children will be more interested in the contents inside.

Stocking for the Dog

Don't forget the dog; he would love to have a little bag for his Christmas presents too. After all he is part of the family I hope.

Christmas Pillowslip

You can make these out of an old plain pillowslip and trace a picture of Santa on the front. Color him in with assorted colored textures. Otherwise you can buy some Christmas patterned material, (look for remnants) these will be cheaper. Sew up the same as a normal pillow slip. Fill and hang on the mantelpiece or wherever you leave there presents.

Tote Bags

These can be made up from all sorts of materials for young children or the older person. They can be made to use as shopping bags or bags to take to the beach. Size and material will depend on the occasion it will be used.

Felt Toys

You can make virtually any sort of toys for kids out of felt. Beware to you sew the eyes, nose and mouth on securely as you do not want buttons or any similar thing swallowed by a young child.

Crafts of all sorts

You may prefer to use up some scrap materials by making all sorts of crafts like:

  • Tissue box covers
  • Pin cushions
  • Teapot cozy or gravy jug cover
  • Headbands
  • Diaper bags
  • Cushion covers
  • Peg holder bag
