Drunk People and Alcohol Detox
Most drunk people who have been out of control with their drinking for a long time could benefit greatly from alcohol detox. If they follow this detox process up with residential treatment and group therapy then this is even better. Those who stick it out through the entire treatment process are likely to do much better than those who simply go through the first few days, get detox from drugs and alcohol, and then simply return to their old environment.
The thing is that most drunk people do not mind the detox process so much, it is the idea of living life without self medicating that is so challenging for the average alcoholic. To them, it is not so much about getting sober as it is about staying sober. What needs to happen is that they need to find a new way to live. If they simply put down the bottle and return to their old ways, hanging around the same people and doing the same sorts of things, then they are going to end up drunk again. If you start out with alcohol detox then you need to follow this up with real treatment and some sort of ongoing program in order to experience sustained sobriety. Detox by itself will get the typical drunk nowhere. What they really need is a new way to live. There are various programs that promise to give people this new design for living but one of the most powerful methods is to create your own design for living. A drunk likes to be in control and they like they fact that they can control their mood at will by simply imbibing with more alcohol. So why not control their own recovery and design a program that works for themselves? Most of us cannot do this during our first few days sober but if we stick it out and give sobriety a chance then we will be able to one day control our own destiny in recovery. We can essentially create the life we always wanted to live by growing as a person in our recovery. Some programs state that we are powerless, but this can send a mixed signal and the wrong message to some people. In fact one of the great keys of recovery is a growing self esteem that propels us forward to meet new goals that we make for ourselves. We are not so much powerful in recovery as we are active and eager to experience new things. We strive for a purposeful life that can be lived with passion. One way to achieve this is by helping other people in our recovery. If we stay isolated and selfish then we are not growing much spiritually. If we can reach out and make real connections with others then we are on a path of growth.
