Dry Skin

There are a lot things that are fun and relaxing and dry skin is not one of them. After having some problems with dry, itchy skin it seemed like it was time do some researching. After looking around and checking out the available information, I discovered what I could do to help myself. Here are some great ways to help you with skin problems you may have.

Healthy skin is normally very soft and elastic because of a naturally occurring substance called lipids. Lipids are the body's naturally moisturizers that keep your skin from drying out. Often, people will unintentionally take away those natural oils by taking hot or frequent baths or showers and using powerful soaps with strong deodorants. Those two things can cause you to have dry, itchy skin.

Dry skin can be also caused by the surrounding environment and humidity (or lack of). During the winter, the cold weather extracts the moisture from your skin. Also, the dry heat in your home furnace can also dry out your skin.

Other lesser known causes of dry skin are strong topical and prescription medications. If you're taking medication and have prolonged and severe dry skin, you may want to speak with your physician. It is the medication you're taking, the doctor can possibly prescribe you an alternative.

So what are some things you can do about your dry skin? For one, if you are taking steamy hot showers, consider taking showers with warm water for shorter durations. If you use strong soaps or body washes, think about using a different brand that is fragrance free. When toweling off after a bath, don't pat yourself until you're completely dry. Instead, leave your skin slightly damp so that when you use a moisturizer, it holds that moisture onto your skin.

The moisturizer you choose will also impact your dry skin problems. Buy dry skin moisturizers that are viscous and that don't flow or drip easily. Also, you don't necessarily have to buy the premium brands of moisturizers either. In fact, some of the most effective moisturizers are some of the least expensive brands.

Humidifiers are another great way to eliminate dry skin. Place several strategically around you home to add moisture to the air in all the rooms. If you're unable to buy a humidifier, you may want to consider putting out some bowls of water and letting the water evaporate over time. This will also add moisture to the air.

Dry skin doesn't need to be a big deal. Once you know what you can do and what cause it, you can tackle it at the source and live a skin-happy life.
