Dubai - A Sports Lover's Dream

The city of Dubai is usually associated with luxury and opulence. Most people don’t realize that the city doesn’t just cater to the super-rich. There are numerous events and locations throughout Dubai which cater to people with all sorts of interests. Sports lovers won’t be disappointed either since the city hosts a number of high profile sports events throughout the year.

The sports calendar kicks off in January in Dubai, and continues all-round the year. Here is a look at some of the numerous exciting events the city hosts.

Dubai Sports World

Held is association with the Dubai Sports Council; Dubai Sports Week is an annual event which lasts for around two months. It brings together some of the best sports persons in various disciplines to one location. You will be able to interact with professionals in the sport that you love, and pick up valuable tips and tricks. Whether you are a professional athlete or a spectator, Dubai Sports World will be able to cater to all your needs. Some of the sports organized here include volleyball, basketball, football, futsal, badminton, rugby, squash, etc. There is even a separate area for kids.

Dubai Desert Road Run

The Desert Road Run is a sports event held multiple times a year, which not only gives you the opportunity to take part in various long distance races, but also evaluate your progress. Individuals above the age of 14 can participate in a 10km race and there is a 3km race for children between the ages of 6 and 18. Medals will be awarded to everyone who finishes the race. In the 10km run, trophies will be given to the first three men and women in various age groups.

Dubai Rugby Sevens

The Dubai Rugby Sevens is a three day event which attracts fans from all over the world. Started in 1970, it is one of the biggest rugby events in the Middle East and hosts some of the best rugby sevens players in the world. There are separate events for men, women, children, and even veterans. There is enough off-field activity to keep visitors interested as well. The Rugby Village hosts numerous concerts, cheerleading performances and other activities to help keep the fun alive.

Dubai Tennis Championships

One of the biggest events in the world tennis tour, the Dubai Tennis Championships is an annual event which attracts some of the best tennis players from all over the world. Past winners of the championship in both men’s and women’s categories include players such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Justine Henin, Venus Williams, etc. The tournament is usually held during the month of February or March, and is one of the biggest titles in a tennis season.

These are just a few of the sports events held in Dubai. Apart from these events, the city also plays host to other international tournaments such as the BWF Dubai World Series, FIBA U17 World Championship 2014, etc.
