The Durham Coastline – Durham Hotels and Days Out

Durham’s Heritage Coastline runs from Sunderland to Hartlepool and is recognised as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the UK, with a great selection of coastline Durham hotels. Steeped in history with gorgeous bays and breathtaking views, this is a coast well worth a visit. With a 14km coastal path running most of the way along the coastline, it’s an ideal destination for a walking or cycling holiday. The footpath has beach access points along the way, to give walkers the chance to stroll along the sand. There are also valleys and denes to be found along the coastal path, with wooded areas, caves and parkland to explore. The Castle Eden Dene is one of the more famous denes along the Durham Coast. There are amazing views to be enjoyed from the cliff top coastal paths, with information boards and panels to tell you all about the area, and lovely places to stop and enjoy a picnic. If you prefer to relax, play or paddle on the beach, then sand and surf can be found at Longsands Beach and Whitby Bay, both within 30 minutes drive of Durham. There are plenty of Durham hotels which are ideally situated to explore the coastline and surrounding area.

Durham’s Coastline Wildlife

The Durham Coast is home to over 400 species of plants and wild flowers and is a great place for birdwatching, with species such as the Skylark and the Sanderling to be spotted. Be sure to stop off from Durham hotels at Blackhall Rocks to take a look in rockpools, which can reveal crabs, and anemones. Several types of sea mammals have been spotted off the Durham coast – including Harbour Porpoises, Minka Whales and Atlantic White Sided Dolphins. There have also been sightings of the Basking Shark – which is the second largest specie of shark (it is harmless to humans, so no need to worry).

Where to Stay on the Coast – Durham Hotels

After all the sea air, coastal walks and wildlife spotting, you will need somewhere to rest your weary head! Durham hotels are plentiful, with many having easy access to the beautiful coastline. Choose from cosy Guesthouses and B&B’s, campsites or self-catering accommodation. One thing's for sure, your budget will be catered for in Durham.
