Should You Buy a AM01 or AM06?
Are you debating whether to buy the AM01 or AM06 & are curious to know the exact differences between the two Dyson desk fan air multipliers? If so this comparison guide will be able to help you out. Below, we are going to compare & contrast the features and aspects of both the AM01 and AM06, so you can see what improvements have been made to the AM06 and whether the extra price is justified.
Summary of Significant Differences Between the Dyson AM01 and AM06
- The AM06 is more powerful (in terms of air flow velocity) than the AM01.
- The Dyson AM06 is quieter in operation than the AM01
- With the AM06 you get a 'smart' remote control.
- You get an additional 'sleeper timer' program with the AM06.
- The Dyson AM06 is also more energy efficient than the AM01.
See details below.
Air Fan Flow (Power), Oscillation and Touch Tilt
So obviously they are both bladeless table fans (and they look pretty much identical) with the AM06 essentially replacing the Dyson AM01 -- where the new DC motor integrated with the successor model has allowed it to be capable of generating an even more powerful air flow velocity.

They both still air the process of inducement & entrainment to gather around 7 gallons of air every second but where the AM01 can project it up to 15 times, the AM06 can project it around 17.5 times -- through the air multiplier technology integrated & DC motor. With both models, you are then cooled by a non-buffeted, ultra smooth and completely relaxing cool airflow. Moreover, they still have a 10 degree touch tilt mechanism and oscillate on a 90 degree base (without the need for clamping).
A major issue with the first generation of Dyson air multipliers was how loud they were. Yes, they looked cool, were cool (no pun intended) but 'boy' could you hear them going. With the new models (including this AM06 compared to the AM01) they are now much quieter due to the "streamlined air channels" and vast acoustic engineering being conducted with them -- specifically with the development of a "helmholtz cavity" to prevent audible motor noise.
Control and Settings -- AM06 has a new remote control & Sleep Timer
Both the AM01 & AM06 are adjustable on 10 different speed settings (levels 1 to 10) providing you with a wide variation in air flow velocity desired (standard desk fans offer usually a maximum of 3 levels) -- that can be judged by the digital display. However, the AM06 now comes with a magnetic curved remote control to alter your settings with (which will tuck away neatly on the machine) -- which is absent from the AM01.

The AM06 also has a new sleep timer program installed where you can set it to turn itself off automatically after a set period between just 15 minutes and 9 hours. Certainly can come in pretty useful.
AM06 is More Energy Efficient
The AMo6 also consumes at least 30 percent less energy than the Dyson AM01 (even though it is more powerful) this is again due to some great Dyson engineering triumphs. Specifically they refer to the aerodynamic diffuser to allow it essentially be more efficient in creating the air flow. Dyson claimed that if you use the AM01 in tandem with your air conditioning unit you could potentially "lower energy bills by up to 20%", so the AM06 could be an even bigger money saver.
N.b. it is 30 percent less power used for the 10 inch table fan models and 40 percent for the 12 inch table fan.
Dimensions & Specifications
The cord length has been extended to 6.6 ft from 5.9 ft with the AM06, but the newer model is slightly heavier at around 0.3 lbs - but the dimensions are pretty much exactly the same 19.7 x 12.0 x 3.9 inches. You get the option between a 10 inch table fan and 12 inch table fan (the latter being slightly more powerful and expensive) they also come in a range of colors for you (iron/blue, white/silver, silver/silver).
Of course the fact that it is bladeless lends itself a whole range of benefits in itself e.g. safe to be used around curious children, easy to clean etc. You will also get an industry leading two year warranty on either the AM01 or AM06 when bought new.
Hopefully you have a clearer understanding of 'what's the difference between the AM01 and AM06 as well as which is better.
