Are you interested in getting the powerful Dyson canister vacuum -- DC39 -- however are unsure as to which version to buy, either the DC39 Multi-floor or DC39 Animal & want general clarification as to exactly what the difference between the two versions.
The only major difference between the two versions comes in the fact that the Animal gets an extra specialised pet hair pick up attachment -- the tangle free turbine tool & the other doesn't (also there is a change in the colour mesh, the multi-floor comes in a classic yellow & the animal in purple). Moreover, there is also a slight change in the cleaner heads -- the DC39 multi-floor gets the musclehead tool & the Animal gets the TriggerHead tool and articulating hard floor tool (explained in more detail below). Apart from this, all aspects & features of the two versions of the vacuum remains the same.
Whereby one isn't more powerful than the other -- where they still share the same huge 280 AW of constant suction power & are backed by the advanced radial root cyclone technology (that allows it to operate on a bagless mechanism & not to suffer with loss of suction). Moreover, they are both fitted with the re-configured cleaner heads (Multi-floor: MuscleHead & Animal: TriggerHead) that you can use to release the brush bar for when you are vacuuming either soft floor & hard floors (self-adjusting).

Furthermore, both are backed by the same industry leading five year warranty that covers them on both parts & labour (for any breakings that may occur with your DC39). They are also fitted with a filtration system that prevents pollen, allergens & ultra fine dust particles from being expelled into the air whilst vacuuming (essentially just leaving behind healthy clean air -- a particularly important aspect for those who have breathing difficulties e.g. asthmatics & allergy sufferers).
The practical features remain too -- such as the extensive specifications (such as the large max reach of 10m + the cord length of 6.5 m -- as well as a large bin capacity of 2 litres -- along with reasonably compact size dimensions: 36.9 x 26.2 x 50.7 cm) and mobility factor, particularly for a fully sized canister vacuuming with it being lightweight (weighing in at just 7.5 kg) as well as being installed with the centralised Dyson ball mechanism (which essentially allows you to turn on a dime, rather than having to drag your vacuum back & forth to get around tight corners etc.).
The Difference Between the DC39 Multi-Floor & DC39 Animal
With regards to the attachments & accessories -- they both come with the combination tool (basically a crevice tool that can be used for cleaning awkward & tight gaps which also has the ability to double up with a brush nozzle to allow for powered dusting in and around your home) as well as stair tool (that can also be used on upholstery etc.).
The difference in cleaner heads -- the Multi-floor basically comes with a lesser version (in terms of slightly less advanced & poorer pick up rate) MuscleHead tool, whereas the Animal comes with the best of the two -- the TriggerHead tool. Moreover, the Animal also receives the incredibly well regarded Articulating hard floor tool -- which basically is designed purposefully for high effective pick up of dirt, pet hair & dust particles for hard floors & due to its low design profile it is great for tight gaps e.g. in between furniture.
The Animal also receives another highly praised attachment -- the tangle free turbine tool that is basically an ultra effective pick up attachment for pet hair. But, generally speaking it is great for any intricate cleaning job too such as cleaning on the stairs as well as in the car etc. If you have a particularly bad pet hair problem in your household, which is caused by a dog -- I would also advise you take a look at the super useful Dyson Groom tool.

Should I Buy a DC39 Multi-floor or DC39 Animal?
Considering all the extra value that you get with the Animal version of the DC39 with regards to the attachments (the tangle free turbine tool, articulating hard floor tool & better cleaner head for use on all floor types) -- to me for a maximum difference of $50 between the two versions of the DC39, it is a clear choice: to go & opt for the latter. Even, if you don't have any animals or pet hair issues -- every attachment on offer will prove to be very useful to you.
But, will version will you choose & why?
