I know I'm not telling you anything new when I tell you that you should workout to lose extra weight and to stay in good health. We all know that. What we don't all know is just how we're supposed to go about doing it. It's not the knowledge that's missing for many of us, it's the motivation. How do you find the best exercise?

One big mistake a lot of people make is trying to do too much too soon. If you are out of shape and haven't exercised in a while, it's ok to start slowly. As a matter of fact it is better to start slowly. If you try to do too much you risk hurting yourself which may mean that you will have to take time off while you heal. Keep the strains and sprains to a minimum by starting slowly.

Also please set realistic goals. This is another big mistake many people make. They wait too long to start getting in shape before some big event and they don't have enough time. So if you want to be in good shape by the time summer is here, get started now.

When we wait until the last minute we set ourselves up for failure. Allow yourself plenty of time because that's what it will take; time. If you don't you will just fall short of your goal, get discouraged and most likely give up.

If you have any health issues or you've just been inactive for a long time, you should talk to your doctor before you start. They will let you know what limitations you may have when you first start out.

OK, here are some easy tips you can use right now:

1. Find the best exercise for you. This may sound dumb but we are kind of programed to think that we can only get a good workout in a gym. I don't know about you, but I enjoy going to the gym, but the idea of spending 20 or more minutes on a treadmill makes me want to scream.

I also don't like taking classes. So, in order for you to be successful find the activities that you actually enjoy doing so you will do them.

2. Don't underestimate how much you can accomplish with simple daily changes to your routine. Simple things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking further away from the store so you have to walk a little more, taking an evening walk every day, play with your kids and / or dog, etc.

These are all simple things that you can do starting right now that will make a big difference in your health and weight over time.

3. Make some sort of physical activity a part of your daily routine. Don't leave it until later "if you have enough time". 90% of the time, you won't have enough time. Schedule it into your day just like you would your kids soccer practice or a doctors appointment.

The best way to lose weight is to find the best exercise for you and to stick with it.
