An Old-Fashioned Favorite - Easy Gingerbread Recipe

This easy gingerbread recipe is a ‘must make.’ It is simple to make, but it tastes like you have labored in the kitchen for hours. Whenever I make this easy gingerbread recipe, it brings back many fond memories of days gone by. Many years ago, my boss, brought back to the office, after lunch one day, some of this delectable dessert. Their housekeeper, had made this easy gingerbread recipe for their lunch, and he brought some back to the office to share. So, that is where this easy gingerbread recipe came from. You know, we Southerners, we love our stories. Over the years, I have accumulated many wonderful recipes, and as I have entered them into my cookbook, I have included a story about the ‘who, what, where, and when,’ for these memorable recipes.

Gather the ingredients to make this easy gingerbread recipe:

¾ cup shortening

1 ¼ cups granulated sugar

2 eggs

1 cup molasses

1 cup boiling water

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking soda (heaping)

2 ½ teaspoons ginger

2 teaspoons cinnamon

¼ teaspoon cloves

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Let’s Cook

Cream the sugar and the shortening, together, in a large bowl.

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Pour in the molasses, and beat until the mixture is well mixed.

Stir in half of the hot water, and gradually blend in the flour, which has been sifted with all the other dry ingredients. Beat until all the lumps are gone. Pour in the rest of the hot water, and mix well.

Pour into a well greased, and floured, 10-inch tube pan, and bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for approximately 50 minutes. Test for doneness.

The dessert made from this easy gingerbread recipe is delicious, served just as it is. Or, if you prefer, top it with a little whipped cream, or serve it with a lemon sauce.

How to Make a Lemon Sauce

Gather the ingredients to make a lemon sauce:

½ cup granulated sugar

1 ½ tablespoons cornstarch

1 cup water

1 ½ tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice

Let’s Cook

In a two-quart saucepan, mix the sugar and the cornstarch together.

Stir in the water, and continue stirring, until the mixture begins to thicken and boil.

Continue to stir the mixture, while it boils for at least one minute.

Remove the pan from the heat; add in the butter, and the lemon juice, stirring to thoroughly blend.

Your lemon sauce is now ready to be served.

Serve this lemon sauce over a slice of the above gingerbread, made from my easy recipe.
